Review
I have to be honest, I’ve never been familiar with the music of Birds of Tokyo, yet I knew of them, I’m very familiar with that of Karnivool so know what to expect vocally as I knew Ian Kenny sings for both bands. What I wasn’t ready for was an amazing album. This album is so easy to listen to that I actually almost forgot it was on. It was comfortable if that makes any sense. This is a great rock album full of some amazing melodies and very well written songs.

Ian’s at times haunting vocals are perfectly suited to the perfectly arranged music of the band. Songs like ‘Plans’ which lead the album and hook you from the beginning give you a great indication of what is to come and will leave you wanting more, and you get more, luckily because that was track 1 and you may feel a little ripped off otherwise. There’s in some places an almost Muse/silverchair/Faith No More-esque vibe, yet Birds of Tokyo have made it their own and kudos to them for that. I’m only 6 tracks in and really can’t wait to see what the rest of the album brings me. I haven’t heard a bad track yet, every song could be a single, in particular ‘Wild At Heart’ a song that just trailed off in a single rockin’ guitar chord. That’s a good one guys, release that one! The production on this album is big in some parts, but that’s exactly how I like it, big drums and many layers. Yes! There’s ‘oh oh’s’ and if you know me you know I love a good ‘oh oh’ in a song! You get plenty of them in ‘Waiting For The Wolves’ as well as a chorus so catchy you’ll need to go to the chemist to get something for it. The album is rounded out with another favourite of mine, (brackets) in a song! I mean, who doesn’t love brackets. ‘If The Ship Sinks (I Give In)’ is a ripper, perfect way to end a really solid album.

It’s really great to hear music this good come out of Australia, and these guys deserve to be big. If this, their third album is any indication then they will, not should, will be.

Review
Ed is of course best known as the former frontman of The band 'Live' but since their disbanding, Ed has toured the world as a solo artist and has now finally released his first solo effort titled 'Alive’.

I mean in all seriousness, it sounds like a 'Live' album, but how could it not? What is different is that it feels that Ed has taken this opportunity to try something a little different to not make it sound exactly like a new 'Live' album. The songs have really great catchy choruses and musically in places have a completely different feel to his previous works. So when I say it sounds like a 'Live' record I say it in voice only. Ed has done well to make this a relevant rock album which is exactly what it is.

Where 'Alive' really kicks off for me is a few tracks in with 'Grace' wow, this was the lead single and deservidly so, this is what I'm hoping the rest of the album gives me, plenty of rock. Ed does not disappoint. Thanks Ed. 'Drink (Everlasting Love)' was cowritten with Chris Daughtry and you can hear the influence with a great track I can see being added to radio in a heartbeat. The album does have it's ups and downs or as I call these songs 'skippers', but find me one that doesn't these days.

Lyrically Ed has always been more intense than a campsite, and his live performances really showcase the depth and meaning of his words. I look forward to hearing some of these songs on stage as the one thing is that Ed always believes what he is singing and it connects with people. As the album comes to an end, I absolutely love the last track 'Fire On The Mountain' a perfect way to round out this album.

You know, I understand that 'Live' may not have been everyone's thing but forget that, pick up 'Alive' and just enjoy an artist that will continue to have a great career if he can release music of this calibre. Nice work Mr Kowalczyk.
Review
Whilst "Love The Fall" may only be a meagre five track EP, by no means is this reflective of the significant journey Michael Paynter has endured to get to this point in his musical career. Having released a few more than successful singles in mid to late 2008, Paynter then took a path that led him to completely reassess who he was and wanted to be not only as a musician but also as a person. The culmination of this journey now some two years later are a collection of songs that exude a quality and lyrical sincerity that has been lacking amongst new Australian music artists in recent years.

Lead single "Love The Fall" is a wonderously addictive and explosive pop rock song with guest appearances from "The Veronica's" on vocals and also in the video clip. "Are You Alive" allows Paynter's soaring and emotive vocals to really shine against a backdrop of piano, before you are swept away by the uplifting chorus.

Vocally, one can’t help draw comparisons to the power of John Farnham in his prime, the smooth melodicism of say Rick Price and the raw emotion for which the likes of Butch Walker and Jeff Buckley are renowned. The sublime modern pop sensibilities of “Icarus” and “Lay My Armour Down” are equal to anything that I hear on radio these days, whilst Paynter’s vocal performance on“Novacaine” is simply spine tingingly breathtaking!

Although to truly experience Michael Paynter is to witness his live performance where he absolutely achieves his aim “I make music to move people”, this EP serves as a great introduction to an artist that is one of Australia’s most gifted and “real” performers.

Official Press Release
The musical evolution of Michael Paynter has been a series of obsessive love affairs. At the age of 7 it was the piano, at age 12 it was the guitar, and by the age of 15 he was crashing through a set of drums.

It's a natural progression that, at the age of 24, the Melbourne-born singer, lyricist, and multi-instrumentalist has harnessed his talents to release his debut EP Love The Fall.

Michael has travelled the globe four times in as many years, and written with the finest in his field, from Guy Chambers [Robbie Williams] and Adam Argyle [Newton Faulkner] in the UK, to Toby Gad [Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas] and David Ryan Harris [John Mayer] in the US.

Michael knuckled down in the US with famed producer Matt Wallace (Faith No More Maroon 5, Bic Runga) at Sound City Studios, where Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Johnny Cash and Tom Petty cut their classic records.

Michael’s hard work paid off when his song Superheroes was chosen as the soundbed for the hit television series Heroes.
After releasing two acclaimed singles, Michael explains, “I set about touring, travelling and assessing what kind of artist I wanted to be. I spent a lot of time recording, writing, learning and listening to a range of musicians from Muddy Waters, Son House, Eva Cassidy, Sam Cooke and Robert Johnson. In the last two years I set about developing every set of skills I could. I played guitar for hours and hours a day, and I performed hundreds of gigs – it’s just been the best time of growth for me.”
Apart from winning coveted support slots for Newton Faulkner, Vanessa Amorosi, and soul legend Seal, Michael’s personal highlight over the last couple of years have saw him performing at the emotional Bushfire Memorial Service with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and a 500 member choir.

Although much has been said about this multi instrumentalist and his 'big' voice, it seems to be the songs, his fine band and his honest and entertaining live shows that are ringing the 'loudest' bells this time around.

Michael has also embraced social media and the digital world with gusto, engaging with his army of followers on twitter regularly, and often uploading exclusive bonus content to his youtube, twitter, facebook and myspace accounts.

Michael is invigorated by living, breathing and immersing himself in music, and his new EP, released on July 9, features the songs Are You Alive, as heard on Channel Seven’s promo for the final series of Lost, and Love The Fall, which features back up vocals from Michael’s good mates Lisa and Jess Origliasso.

Michael explains, “I met Lisa and Jess when I performed at the ARIA 1’s in 2008. We caught up after the show and that day I made two of the most intensely loyal - albeit miniscule - friends for life. We ran into each other at various awards shows, and soon enough we were hanging out in LA when I was over there to write or record. They are the most genuine and musically gifted girls. We share such a musical affinity and definitely see the world the same way, so it is completely my honour to share my tune with them. They really bought it to life.”

Love The Fall, whose spectacular video was shot in the Northern Californian forest is available now.

Review
Custom Built. Hmm. Ok, let's see what Mr Michaels has for us in his new offering. I must say, it starts and I'm enjoying the very cliched in the only way that Bret knows how song 'Riding Against The Wind' I mean, that was a catchy ditty. Ahhh 10 seconds into the second song we get a 'sexual thing' mention. There's the Bret we all know and love. Whoa. This 'Lie To Me' song is not for the ears of children oh wait he just sang 'Rock my world' ha ha ok let's see if that pops up again later. See it worries me that this song is right before his um, duet with, um, Miley Cyrus. Ok here it is... 'Nothing To Lose' I just don't know if I can like this, ooh ooh there's a Bret only demo version later on, that may save what I actually think is a bloody good song. We'll see if his 'solo' version is better. I just find it wrong that he just talked about both getting undressed, dude, she's 12, isn't that illegal in like 48 states?! So besides the whole Miley thing, this is a great song. Nice work you bandana wearing mofo!!

Three songs in and this is already a much better album than his last effort in my books. It continues to be just a fun rock album, sure it's never going to live up to the early Poison records, but it's now, it's got my foot tapping and I'm seconds away from holding my 'cell phone' up and swaying it around, but I'm actually typing this on it so that would make it difficult. Oh my god. Beatboxing? Or was it Bretboxing? Oh no ma'am I don't like this one, so 'What I Got' is the name of the song, what I got is a skip button, yet I'm about to skip to the track I've been dubious about. The country version of 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' oh please don't be as terrible as you might be...

Ok. I grew up with this song, I love this song, and straight off the bat it's country sounding. Bret has some special guests on this version being Brad Arnold of 3 Doors Down, Chris Cagle and Mark Wills. Does it really need the 'We are the World' treatment? No. Could it have been ok if just Bret sang it. Yes. I get what he was trying to do here and Kudos for trying, but I'm going to go and grab 'Open Up And Say Ahhh' and put the real version on. I don't know if I need to hear this one again anytime soon.

Holy crap. Now it's gone all industrial with a Godhead remix of the 'Rock Of Love' theme song which is actually called 'Go That Far'... Ok I'm just going to listen to 'Every Rose' again. Wow, I don't need to hear this one ever again. Plus he keeps saying 'Rock of Love'. Next. Guitars. Yay. Cowbell. Yay x 2. Thankyou 'Driven' you're much better than the last track. Now we're back to a little bit country with the story telling 'Open Road' with such heartfelt lyrics of 'Let me Rock, let me roll' you just have to take it for what it is. Just fun. I mean this song is ok. Will Poison fans like it. Nah probably not.

The country theme continues with the obviously titled 'Rock'n My Country' which sounds like a Big & Rich song. Hmm... Ok I'm gonna check out the Mileyless 'Nothing To Lose' now. Please be awesome... Ahhh yes. See now Bret this song could be a hit. It's the best thing I've heard you do for years. In fact even though I've heard this song already, this version almost erases the previous tracks I didn't really love. Nice work on this one.

The last track is a song called 'I'D Die For You' not a Bon Jovi cover although it does start with a talkbox. And unfortunately not the way I would've ended the record. Rounding it out with the previous track would've been much much better.

Overall it was ok. I mean, I like it but I don't love it. It was a bit all over the place and to me didn't know what it wanted to be. Rock? Country? Industrial? Sleazy? Disney?! But for what it is, a Bret Michaels solo album, does it deserve a listen? 'Yeah it does...'

Review
Having just reviewed an album with barely a guitar solo in sight, it is therefore almost timely that I now sit to review this the fifth studio release from former Marilyn Manson and current Rob Zombie guitarist, John 5 aka John Lowery. Unless you are a fan or either Marilyn Manson or Rob Zombie, or you are a guitar head, then you could be forgiven for having not heard of John 5 before. But once you read his jaw dropping resume, then you would be scratching your head thinking how could you have not? Either playing with or contributing to or recording with, John 5 has worked with Rob Zombie, Rob Halford, Marilyn Manson, David Lee Roth, Lita Ford, Paul Stanley, Meatloaf, Scorpions, KD Lang, Robin Zander, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rick Springfield and even Salt N Pepa! Now that’s a diverse line up....

Unsuprisingly, given that resume “The Art Of Malice” too is a diverse piece of work. Whilst I certainly appreciate instrumental guitar albums and the likes of guitarists Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani etc, I certainly don’t proclaim to be a “shredder” and therefore from instrumental guitar albums I seek songs, rather than necessarily song after song of jaw dropping pyrotechnics. Over an enjoyable 45 minutes or so, “The Art Of Malice” balances the two almost perfectly, whilst also stamping a distinct identity/personality...which you don’t have to look much past the album cover for that :)

The aptly titled “The Nightmare Unravels” does just that, with it’s suspenseful opening tones the prelude to an onslaught of industrial and then thrashy riffs, before some lightning fast pyrotechnics add another dimension. I know it’s a cliche, but this SONG literally did have me on the edge of my seat, not quite sure where the next turn would take me. Notice how I emphasised the word SONG....

In the first of a few tracks that display John 5’s guitar talents in the area of country, bluegrass, spanish, picking and clean tones, the title track is just a brief introduction into what is to come. “I’ll Will Or Spite” with punchy riff’s evolves into a melodic chorus reminding of “Surfing With The Alien” era Joe Satriani, a track perfect for those action sequences. The track “J.W” displays the varying talents of this gifted guitarist, with the 60’s sounding song being a tip of the hat to the likes of Chet Atkins and country jazz, likewise “Steel Guitar Rag” with it’s crackling vinyl tones, transports me to images of a guitarist sitting on a back porch in the USA in the days when guitars had barely been founded, before the song becomes a toe tapping romp. Now who would of expected this from a guitarist primarily known for his work with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie??

“Ya Dig” featuring Billy Sheehan on bass, is an ode dedicated to David Lee Roth and is a frenetic song that certainly has that heavy Van Halen kinda vibe aka “Hot For Teacher”. In stark contrast, the emotive, melodic and in comparison to most of the tracks on this album, minimalistic “Can I Live Again”, sees the listener transported on a journey through the song, where John 5 rely’s solely on song structure, rather than his talents with the guitar. A true highlight of the album... “Portrayed As Unremorseful” brings out the blazing guns again and features some slightly subtle Jimmy Page references midway through. Whilst “Fractured Mirror” is a direct tribute to Ace Frehley and a rendition of Ace’s song.

Closing with the acoustic “The Last Page Turned”, I can only hope this isn’t the last page turned in the solo career of John 5. As a guitarist and personality who has been more associated with the stronger and dominant personalities of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, “The Art Of Malice” is a wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable insight into the evidently innovative and diverse personality of John 5, songwriter and guitarist.

Official Press Release
John 5 has one of the most impressive resumes in rock. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, across a variety of genres and is known as one of the best modern shredders today. He is even likened to the Page or Hendrix of THIS generation! However, you could be forgiven if you hadn’t heard of him, but he is one of the most admired and respected players on the planet.

John 5 joined shock rock troupe Marilyn Manson in 1998 where he remained until 2004. He then released 3 solo album before gaining a new permanent position as guitarist for Rob Zombie. Steve Vai referred to John as an “underrated guitar giant”.

Now with ‘The Art Of Malice’ John 5 continues to build his own reputation and continues to write for other artists. His hard work has paid off. John 5 is no longer just ‘that dude in that band’ he is an artist in his own right and is changing the way people listen to guitar music today.
Sure he proved that he had an awesome rock voice, belting out killer version’s of 80’s rock classics “Run To The Hills”, “18 And Life” and “Shout It Out Loud”, but that doesn’t necessarily mean those that control the destiny of these Idol performers see the performer in the same way when it comes to the commercial reality of album sales!

Saying as much about the strength of the Swedish music scene as anything, supporting Erik Gronwall on this release is a who’s who of the local scene in the way of songwriting & production, making this a thoroughly enjoyable release. With songs ranging from fist pumping melodic rock, hook laden pop, radio friendly rock and more introspective acoustic ballads, with Gronwall vocally adapting to each change in style effortlessly. Production is as good as it get’s with some of Sweden’s hottest producers involved, none more notable than the duo of Anders Wikstrom (Treat guitarist) and Frederik Thomander who have lent their hand in 2009/2010 to some of hard rock’s most notable releases....Scorpion’s “Sting In The Tail”, Treat’s “Coup De Grace”, Gotthard’s “Need To Believe” and The Poodles.

Opening track and second single, “Take Me On” written by Europe’s, Joey Tempest is a very safe mid tempo modern rock number that will no doubt find it’s way to the top of the charts. The changing dynamics of “Uphill Climb” from heavy riffing to acoustic driven verses and catchy chorus reaches it’s peak during the breakdown when Gronwall hints at that voice that delivered some of those 80’s rock classics. “Try” and “Stay”, are both enjoyable radio friendly pop songs, but nothing remarkable.

It’s not until the middle of the album in“Crash And Burn” where the album starts to take off, which sounds like a rocked up version of Savage Garden at their most energetic, explained no doubt by the pedigree of the songwriting trio for this song having connections with boyband Westlife, however Niklas Jarl also co-wrote H.E.A.T’s chart topping anthem “1,000 Miles”!
“Destination Anywhere” is one of the albums killer tracks, a fist pumping melodic rock anthem that was co-written by Gronwall and one of the hottest melodic songwriters in the world today, Erik Martensson, lead singer from Eclipse and also involved in the recent W.E.T and First Signal projects. Put simply, this track could easily be featured on any of those projects...

The Paul Stanley and Andreas Carlsson penned “Timeless” has a Dianne Warren penned power ballad written all over it, more specifically channelling Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing”. Actually, something just occured to me about this album whilst listening to this song.....guitar solo’s, a power ballad needs a guitar solo and this song doesn’t have one, nor does most of this album for that matter. Shame....

“Breathe In, Breathe Out” for those who have been loving Treat’s latest, feature’s the songwriting and production of that band’s guitarist Anders Wikstrom and this song does not disappoint. A killer melodic rock song with an explosive chorus that never wants to end a contender for one of my songs of 2010! “Walls Are Coming Down” also features the same production team. The album’s title track written by Nicke Borg from Backyard Babies is another of the album’s highlights. An upbeat acoustic pop rock number, it is typically Swedish sounding (at least to these Australian ears) and will appeal to anyone who is familiar with Per Gessle from Roxette’s and Joey Tempest’s solo work. “In Spite Of Me” a Max Martin penned number, is what you would expect from a Max Martin number, it has hit single written all over it, but could easily be recorded from anyone for whom he has written for before!

With album one featuring an all-star cast, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Erik Gronwall. With a background in punk rock and metal and with him proving to handle melodic rock and pop with aplomb....will he find himself stuck “somewhere between a rock and a hard place” trying to balance his own musical desires with the wants and needs of the Idol machine?

Official Press Release
Erik Gronwall is a Swedish singer and songwriter. In December 2009, he won Swedish Idol. He made quite an impression on the jury who reacted with a mix of crying and laughing after his audition singing Skid Row's "18 and Life". Erik performed several rock songs during the show; Kiss – “Shout It Out Loud”, Iron Maiden – “Run To The Hills” and Queen – “The Show Must Go On”. During several of the shows he received standing ovations from the jury for his performances.

His first single, "Higher", sold gold on digital downloads after only three days. His first self titled album, "Erik Gronwall" which includes songs performed during the Idol shows, was released just ten days after the finals and debuted at number one on the swedish charts and was certified platinum. Erik was born in Knivsta, a small town about 30 miles north of Stockholm. In his early years he attended a kindergarten with a special focus on music, where he found an early passion for performing arts[. Erik started his musical career with playing the guitar in a local punk/rock band. During high school his focus went from playing the guitar to more singing. His future as a singer really took shape for the first time as he performed the leading role as Galileo Figaro in the Queen musical "WeWill Rock You", doing a number of shows at Oscarsteatern in Stockholm.

Erik has just released his 2nd album “Somewhere Between A Rock And A Hard Place in June 2010.
Review
Melbourne three piece Celadore on their EP ‘Distance Is A Gun’ display a maturity and sense of musicianship that on face value certainly belies their age. The video for title track ‘Distance Is A Gun’ has been receiving airplay on Video Hits and the opening guitar riff will no doubt bring back a flood of memories for fans of Motor Ace. The song has bundles of melody, light and shade and an undeniable energy. ‘Make Sure‘ is an equally catchy little number that has a very distinct Australian pop sound. The lush and majestic opening verse of ‘Eliza’ deceptively lures the listener, before it’s crashing chorus and addictive “yeah yeah and whoa’s”. The rawness and rambunctious rock of ‘You Say I Say Too Much’ almost has an early Foo Fighters vibe, but just like the Foo Fighters at their most rocking moments, melody is always high on the agenda. Closing track ‘Control’ with it’s uplifting vibe is a song that screams out “SINGLE” and whets the appetite for more from this highly talented band.

Official Press Release
With an honest love for melodic pop-rock, Celadore’s approach to their debut EP Distance Is A Gun was all about the songs.
“Our songs are drawn from personal experience. ‘Distance Is A Gun’ is the title track and strangely enough was the last song that we worked on prior to recording. We had already started pre-production when Coops brought in a rough demo. With its catchy pulse and crashing chorus, it was the way the relatively bleak and defeated lyrics sat with the upbeat energy of the melody that stood out.” - Celadore

Playing together since their early teens, guitarist/vocalist Michael Cooper and bassist Tom Ahmed would steal away from class to jam in their high school rehearsal room, but the three piece wasn’t complete until they welcomed drummer David Noordhoff in 2009. With the full line up realised, they set off to record their debut in the secluded sanctuary of a coastal beach shack in East Victoria.

Taking inspiration from their idols Crowded House, Motor Ace, Elliott Smith, Big Heavy Stuff and The Beatles, Celadore’s sound swings between brooding rock, subdued balladry and uplifting pop. It was this care for delicate melodies and driving hooks that grabbed the attention of UK producer Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters - Colour And The Shape, Kisschasy - Hymns For The Non-Believer, Gyroscope - Cohesion). Responding to a couple of rough mixes sent over to his East London studios, Chris was quick to take up the job of mixing ‘Distance Is A Gun.’

“I liked what I heard immediately. For me, it’s all about melody, and Celadore have it in spades.” - Chris Sheldon

Greater than the sum of its parts, Celadore make big noise for a little band. Their new single and title track from the Distance Is A Gun EP is yet another confident offering, following the late 2009 release of their “Make Sure” single.

Distance Is A Gun Tracklisting:
1. Distance Is A Gun
2. Make Sure
3. Eliza
4. You Say I Say Too Much
5. Control

Review
I have to get this out in the open straight up, I am a sucker for palm trees, beaches and Santa Monica pier, so when I saw the cover of Sing It Loud’s second album ‘Everything Collides’ it had my attention instantly! The danger with that of course is whether the music would capture my attention in the same way? In the case of this Minnesota quintet, I can confidently say that indeed it does with a 40 odd minute soundtrack of anthemic pop rock that will warm up your Australian winter, or be the perfect soundtrack to your summer for those elsewhere in the world.

Opening track and lead single ‘Sugar Sweet’ with it’s infectious lead guitar will reel in any of us that love the mere mention of ‘california’, ‘sun’ and ‘waves’ in a song. It’s super catchy with hooks a’plenty and isn’t so sugar sweet that it’s sickly. The crunchy and driving guitars of ‘Thunderstorms’ is one of the heavier tracks on the album and hints at the influence of the album mixer Mike Shipley known to many of us hard rock fans for his work with the likes of Def Leppard and Winger for example. The lyrical themes throughout traverse from typical tales of summer, to the joys of love, the bitterness of breakups and and everything in between, mixed with lush vocal harmonies to convey the mood of the song, such as on one of the best songs that Third Eye Blind never wrote ‘Here For You’.

The middle of the album blends into itself a little with a range of mid paced and acoustic type numbers, but the pleasing thing is that each song still brings a different dynamic and has it’s own identity. This was not lost on the band as they set out specifically trying to achieve this, with Def Leppard’s genre defining hard rock album ‘Hysteria’ being used as a blueprint for tackling every song as it’s own individual entity. Whilst no songs on this album sound like Def Leppard, my favourite track ‘I Can’t Let’ is indeed an awesome rock song that draws on a slight Rick Springfield influence and will be stuck in your head for days....’I can’t keep myself from singing’, indeed I can’t!!!

Whilst ‘Everything Collide’ doesn’t bring anything drastically new to the table in the mass market of 3 word pop rock bands aged in their twenty somethings that litter the mainstream these days, the band are wisely moving in the rights steps forward to distinguish themselves from the masses. Their debut album was firmly planted into that generic category, however 2nd album up, they deliver a slightly mature sound with GUITAR SOLO’S that takes me back to the days when Third Eye Blind, Nine Days, The Click Five and American Hi Fi ruled the airwaves. Importantly though, this album is chock full of catchy power pop rock and that’s really all that matters!

Official Press Release
Breakout Minneapolis pop-rock group Sing It Loud will be releasing their hotly anticipated sophomore album, Everything Collide, on May 7 via Epitaph Records. Made up of Pat Brown (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Kieren Smith (Guitar/Backing Vocals), Nate Flynn (Bass), Ben Peterson (Piano/Keyboard) and Chris Lee (Drums), the quintet entered Studio Melmac in Minneapolis in the fall of 2009 with producer/engineer/mixer Jordan Schmidt (All Time Low, Quietdrive) at the helm, while Grammy Award-winner Mike Shipley (My Chemical Romance, Def Leppard) provided additional mixes after recording. The result is thirty-seven minutes of undeniable, chart-worthy pop-rock hits that will please their fans and have new listeners falling head-over-heels for them soon.

“I know many bands say this but we wanted to make an album that would stand out from all of the bands releasing albums in our genre and I truly feel like we went above and beyond that expectation,” explains frontman Pat Brown. “We also wanted to create an album that you can listen to from front to back that is strong and dynamic all the way through, which I feel doesn't happen enough these days. I remember listening to bands like Taking Back Sunday, The Starting Line, Less Than Jake, Fall Out Boy, Motion City Soundtrack, bands I would listen to their albums over and over and over from track one until the end. That's what I think people will do with Everything Collide.”

A follow-up to 2008’s beloved debut Come Around, Everything Collide features eleven mega-anthemic pop-rock hits like “Sugar Sweet,” “Addicted to When You’re Gone” and “Light It Up,” combining the band’s memorable lyrics and alluring melodies with rock infused guitars, warm buzzing keys and bounding rhythm on the perfect soundtrack for coming of age in an endless summer.

“Fans can expect an honest album with summer jams, fast songs, slow songs, acoustic songs, love songs and dark songs,” adds Brown. “All of the songs on Everything Collide are written about 100 percent personal experience. There are songs about our hometown, our friends, falling in love, getting your heart broken and even one about forgiving people you used to hate. There isn't one song that you won't be able to relate to on Everything Collide."

Rather than being given a ticket to the top overnight, Sing It Loud have worked diligently over the past two years, building a personal connection with fans across the country. From playing surprise shows at packed high school cafeterias, to after-show meet-and-greets and personal phone calls to thrilled fans, Sing It Loud are building a career-long audience through hard work and perseverance, and it’s paying off. Not only is Sing It Loud being embraced on a national level by fans, but they’re also being championed by MTV and popular teen/music websites and publications as critics begin to take notice.

Primed to take over as pop-rock’s next biggest act, Sing It Loud are ready to shine with their latest release, Everything Collide.

Everything Collide Tracklisting:
1. Sugar Sweet
2. Thunderstorms
3. Here With You
4. Only One
1. Addicted To When You're Gone
6. Shadows
7. Believe in Me
8. Light it Up
9. Letting Go
10. I Can't
11. Wonder Why

Review
In what is shaping up as a massive year for metal releases in 2010, it doesn’t get much bigger than a new album from Iron Maiden. With the announcement of the release of the bands new studio album titled THE FINAL FRONTIER, the lovely chaps have also released a teaser from the album in the form of ‘El Dorado’ which you can check out for yourself below. With a trademark galloping riff, the song is distinctly Iron Maiden and certainly hints at an album with a ‘classic’ Maiden sound, The song does border on more of a hard rock sound than pure metal, taking a a few minutes out of it’s nearly 7 minutes to really hit top gear, but once it does, longtime Maiden fans should be left excited enough and with high expectations of what the band will deliver on‘The Final Frontier’.

Official Press Release
The release date for IRON MAIDEN’S highly anticipated new studio album THE FINAL FRONTIER is now confirmed for Friday 13th August. The new album artwork has just been unveiled on their website www.ironmaiden.com and was illustrated by Melvyn Grant. To mark the occasion, the band have made special arrangements for one new album track 'EL DORADO' to be made available Worldwide as a FREE digital download MP3 with immediate effect via their website www.ironmaiden.com.

Singer Bruce Dickinson explains: “‘El Dorado’ is a preview of the forthcoming studio album. As we will be including it in the set of our Final Frontier World Tour (which opens in Dallas On 9th June) we thought it would be great to thank all our fans and get them into The Final Frontier mood by giving them this song up front of the tour and album release.”

The band reunited with long-time Maiden producer Kevin “Caveman” Shirley in early 2010 at Compass Point Studios, Nassau to record the album and then moved to LA to finish the recording and do the mixing. Compass Point Studio is very familiar to the band, it was where they recorded the Piece Of Mind (’83), Powerslave (’84) and Somewhere In Time (’86) albums.

Bruce comments: “The studio had the same vibe and it was EXACTLY as it had been in 1983, NOTHING had changed! Even down to the broken shutter in the corner...same carpet....everything... It was really quite spooky. But we felt very relaxed in such a familiar and well-trodden environment and I think this shows in the playing and the atmosphere of the album”

Thirty years on from their eponymous debut album in April 1980, The Final Frontier will be Maiden’s 15th studio album, making a remarkable average of a new album every two years for 30 years and totalling over 80 million album sales during this period.

THE FINAL FRONTIER TRACK LISTING

1. Following this the tour will ship over to Europe starting in Dublin on July 30 and playing a few selected major festivals and stadiums, finishing in Valencia, Spain, on Aug 21 and including a concert in Transylvania. No Australian tour dates are scheduled at this stage.

Says bass player and founder member Steve Harris: “We’re hugely excited about this tour. I think the fans will really like the brand new stage production and lights and we will also be debuting one of the new album tracks, ‘El Dorado’. Our Texan fans will be the very first people anywhere to hear it live, so it will be interesting to see their reaction and how it goes down with the crowd on the night! Eddie has changed a bit for this tour but is possibly the most outrageous one to date...I can’t say too much about him as don’t want to spoil the surprise but I guarantee he will scare the hell out of you !”

Review
Really, the question has to be asked WHY? Well firstly, of course there is a Vince Neil book on the horizon and this collection of covers, in addition to a couple of originals, is to serve as the soundtrack to the book. Obviously the legendary collection of Mötley Crüe tunes is not deemed an appropriate soundtrack and instead readers are deemed to be wanting to listen to Vince
churn through tracks such as Elvis’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Who’ll Stop The Rain’ or Long Cool Woman’ by The Hollies?

The album is certainly well produced with a monster sound, whilst the former Slaughter duo of Dana Strum on bass and Jeff Blando on guitar provide some super performances, especially some scorching solo’s from Blando. Of the original tracks, the Nikki Sixx penned balladesque‘Another Bad Day’ a leftover from Crue’s 2000 album ‘New Tattoo’ is definitely the pick over the title track ‘Tattoos & Tequila’ which is a modern sounding track that could of easily come from any band that has played ‘Cruefest’.

In the album’s favour is certainly the unique track selection which spares us of the usual predictable selections on other covers releases. The Scorpion’s ‘Another Piece Of Meat’ , the obscure Elton John rock track ‘Bitch is Back’ and ‘He’s A Whore’ by Cheap Trick being the highlights. These are mighty fine renditions I must add! Maybe in the context of the book itself, this album will make more sense. It certainly doesn’t match Vince’s classic solo release ‘Exposed’ and if you haven’t been a Vince Neil fan up until now, then this album certainly isn’t going to change your mind otherwise. But for the Crue faithful, then this is a worthwhile addition to the collection.

Speaking of the book by the same name to be released in late September, I can inform that it promises “Having experienced a life of triumphs, pitfalls, extravagance and debauchery, Vince Neil unearths everything that was left unsaid in Mötley Crüe’s, The Dirt. This book is about Vince Neil. It’s about taking stock of the life I’ve lived and telling the tales, dredging up the good old days and having a good laugh, maybe a good cry too before it’s all over.”

Official Press Release
International superstar, accomplished businessman and heartfelt philanthropist, Vince Neil came to exemplify all things rock and roll: the sound, the success, the look and the outrageous lifestyle. Vince’s unmistakable voice leads some of the greatest rock songs of this generation including “Shout At The Devil,” “Home Sweet Home,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart,” “Same Ol Situation,” and the recent “Saints of Los Angeles,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2009 for Best Hard Rock Performance. With fifteen years between his last solo album, Vince Neil releases Tattoos & Tequila on June 4, followed by his tell all book of the same name later in the fall.

In addition to selling 80 million records around the world as the badass frontman for Mötley Crüe, Vince Neil also began his career as a solo artist in 1993. Vince’s Top 200 Billboard albums, Exposed (which reached number 13 on The Billboard 200 albums chart) and Carved In Stone have spurred the hits “You’re Invited (But Your Friend Can’t Come)” (co-written by Vince with Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw), “Can’t Have Your Cake” (co-written by Vince with Steve Stevens) and “Sister Of Pain” (co-written by Vince with Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw).

The International rock icon’s new album Tattoos & Tequila, co-produced by Neil, Jack Blades (Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper) and Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Buckcherry) is a compilation of genre defining hits that have been given the Vince Neil rock renewal treatment and is sure to be an updated rock lifestyle staple. Neil’s refreshed collection of classics consists of nine hand-picked, influential covers, as well as two new tracks; “Tattoos & Tequila,” which was also written and produced by Frederiksen and “Another Bad Day,” which was originally written by Nikki Sixx for Mötley Crüe’s release of New Tattoo in 2000 and just missed the cut. “Mötley Crüe recorded ‘Another Bad Day’ many years ago and I thought it was one of the best ballads we’d ever done. When it got voted off of New Tattoo by the rest of Mötley, I held onto it waiting for the right time to dust it off,” adds Vince. The title song for the album captures Vince’s signature sound with a contemporary feel that has been compared to current acts such as Cavo and Godsmack.

“Tattoos & Tequila” celebrates the rock n’ roll lifestyle which has served as the centerpiece for Vince Neil's career over the past 30 years.

Track Listing:
Tattoos & Tequila
He's A Whore
AC/DC
Nobody's Fault
Another Bad Day
No Feelings
Long Cool Woman
Another Piece Of Meat
Who Will Stop The Rain
Viva Las Vegas
Bitch Is Back
Beer Drinkers And Hell Raisers

Every so often a new band comes along that from out of nowhere releases a debut album that completely knocks you off your feet! Back in 2008, that band was H.E.A.T from Sweden who released an album that for me personally captured everything I love about music in a way that very few other bands have. Musically, lyrically, visually with imagery of sunsets, palm trees and airports and themes of positivity, time and space that appealed just as much as the music....it was an album that delivered on all counts. Since 2008 H.E.A.T have taken the melodic rock world by storm, with tours all over Europe and the UK and major festival appearances at the likes of Sweden Rock, Firefest in the UK and even Loud Park in Japan. Not to mention even trying their hand at representing Sweden in the iconic Eurovision Song Contest and whilst they were unsuccessful in being chosen as Sweden’s representative, the band ended up with a massive hit single ‘1000 Miles’ as a result.

Now here in 2010, H.E.A.T are back with their follow up album ‘Freedom Rock’ which features 13 tracks of sheer melodic bliss. Compared to the debut, ‘Freedom Rock‘ whilst lacking the magic upon first listen, is an album of high quality classy melodic rock that displays the maturity of the band in not only songwriting, but also musicianship. Opening track ‘We’re Gonna Make It To The End’ is almost as perfect as it gets if you were to introduce someone to what H.E.A.T is all about. The catchiest song on the album, it will invade your aural senses with it’s infectious lead guitar break, soaring lead vocals and heavenly background vocals throughout, it is H.E.A.T at their anthemic best and just when you thought the song couldn’t pack anymore punches, the breakdown after the guitar solo elevates the song to a whole different level.

The bluesier ‘Black Night’ featuring one of H.E.A.T’s more prominent fans in Edguy/Avantasia’s Tobias Sammet on lead vocals, is not to be confused as being a Deep Purple cover, although the hammond keys throughout the track certainly channel a Deep Purple influence. In stark contrast the mega AOR anthem of ‘I Can’t Look The Other Way’ showcases
the more pure AOR direction that the band has headed with this album compared to the debut. The ballad ‘Shelter’ is one of those tracks that grows on you with repeated listens and features some simply stunning vocal arrangements.

‘Beg Beg Beg’ the first single from the album is funnily not even in my top 10 tracks on the album, sure it’s a fun rock song with some unadulterated 80‘s influences, but doesn’t quite measure up against a killer anthem such as ‘Danger Road’ which could be lifted straight from your favourite 80’s action movie montage sequence! From here on in the album is an avalanche of pure melodic rock bliss. ‘Stay’ is classic H.E.A.T and may be familiar to some from the Japanese version of the first album.

‘Everybody Wants To Be Someone’ is one of the album’s definite highlights, a song that may start slowly with a vocal and keyboard first verse, but builds to be an anthem of epic proportions, fuelled by a scorching vocal performance from one of the finest going around at the moment in Kenny Leckremo and some Toto’esque backing vocals. ‘Nobody Loves You’ (Like I Do) and ‘I Know What It Takes’ are a double shot of trademark H.E.A.T uptempo feel good rock with some blistering guitar work.
In the classy AOR of ‘Cast Away’ buried towards the end of the album, I have to almost boldly state that this is now my favourite H.E.A.T track of them all. Displaying how the band has evolved as songwriters, the majesty of this track is that it is not as immediate as the rest and takes repeated listens before it charms you with it’s endless melodies and hooks, as will the album closer ‘Who Will Stop The Rain’.

With a weight of expectations on their shoulders as a result of their magical debut, the band have certainly delivered with ‘Freedom Rock’ and prove that they are a legitimate force to be reckoned in the world of AOR and melodic rock.

Read our interview with H.E.A.T guitarist Eric Rivers by clicking here!

For the uninitiated, Aussie rock band Motor Ace formed in 1998 and disbanded in 2005, having released three albums that saw the band put their definitive stamp on the Australian rock scene at the time. This DVD release showcases the bands final performance on 23 December 2005 in their hometown Melbourne, played in front of a packed house at the Hi Fi Bar.

Having personally witnessed one of the bands earliest performances in 1998 supporting Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes at the Mercury Lounge, watching this DVD sure brings back a flood of memories of the 7 years the band were in existence. Reflecting over the 2 hours of this DVD, whilst feeling the loss of a band that provided a soundtrack for 7 years of my life, I also can’t help but marvel at the evolution of the band from the monstrous rock of their debut EP, the hook infested rock of the likes of ‘Death Defy’ and ‘Hey Driver’ to the majestic soundscapes they left us with on their final album ‘Animal’.

More than just a live concert, blended amongst the songs there is candid footage from Japanese and USA tours and other bits and pieces. Throughout their 20 odd song set, the band traverse from the blistering rock of 'Chairman Of The Board' and 'Criminal Past' that brought them to the attention of many when out touring with the likes of 28 Days, Machine Gun Fellatio and NoKTuRNL in the very early days, which is a stark contrast to where the band had matured as evident on songs like ‘Not So Blue’ and ‘A Little Closer’ from what ended up being their final album 'AnImal'.

Equally as compelling as the footage itself is the liner notes, which provide a fascinating insight into not only the history of the band, but also in the band’s own words, a summation of the events that led to their demise. Two Top 10 charting albums, tours with international acts such as Blink 182 and Oasis, having your music featured all over Australian TV, numerous Top 40 singles and if there was such a “prize” for your quality of songwriting, then Motor Ace surely would have also received those in spades. Look no further than the song lead singer Patrick Robertson boldly states as “this is our best song”, which is ‘Siamese’ which is then followed up by the equally spine tingling version of ‘Lorenzo’.

Even the best part of five years on, the bands legacy lives on here in Melbourne with up and comers Celadore citing Motor Ace as a key influence to their songwriting, with their debut EP ‘Distance Is A Gun’ even capturing the attention of, and mixed by, Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters) who mixed the Motor Ace debut CD 'Five Star Laundry'.

As much as it is a sentimental trip down memory lane for all Motor Ace fans, this ESSENTIAL DVD is as much an introduction to potential new fans who may have missed the band during their existence in the late 90's to mid 2000's. Motor Ace....may the legacy live on!

Ahhh Meat Loaf you're fun. From the title of this his 11th studio album 'Hang Cool Teddy Bear' to the always amazing cover art you just know you're in for a treat. To use the word epic is a big call but from the opening track 'Peace on Earth' where the Loaf declares that he in fact doesn't want it that he just wants to go home, well mate I hope you don't because there's plenty of album to go. And all your friends that helped you on this record don't want you to go yet either. Let's see... Brian May, Steve Vai, Jack Black, James Michael, Kara Dioguardi, House and Justin Hawkins and throw in a track written by Jon Bon Jovi and Desmond Child you pretty much have no idea how this album will turn out. I'm excited and eager.

But I say that loosely because it's Meat Loaf. His vocals are unmissable, it's playful, tongue in cheek and exactly why people love Marvin. Check out some of these song titles. 'Los Angeloser' ha ha 'Love is not real' wow such optimism 'song of madness' yeah sounds about right 'California isn't big enough (Hey there girl)' which is my personal favourite due to the brackets and of course 'Elvis in Vegas' well what do you say to that?

Ha, well I'll be... This album is based on the short story funnily enough titled 'Hang Cool Teddy Bear' by Kilian Kerwin. That's actually a good name for an album. Wait... Oh yeah.

These songs are really really catchy. I'm here foot tapping to all of them and loving it all. Some amazing talent on this album musically as it sounds so tight and so full. I mean when you have Rob Cavallo (worked with Adam Lambert, Kid Rock, Fleetwood Mac, Shinedown and more ) produce and Chris Lord Alge (Greenday, Daughtry, Slipknot, Darren Hayes and more) mix the album who are both the 'go to' guys at the moment you're pretty much set and seriously, this is a polished album. It also runs at 1 hour and 5 minutes. Gotta love that for 13 songs. Pure Meat Loaf.

Overall a quality record that is what it is. If you're a fan of the Loaf you need this. If you're not, give it a listen. It'll make you happy.

Now I have always been a fan of Sevendust, they always make me feel so much better when one of those angry moods comes about. It's fun to get all that anger out as a 1 man mosh pit. So when 'Cold Day Memory' hit stores on the 20th April, so did I. I was very excited as this album marks the return of guitarist Clint Lowery who had been absent from the bands last 3 efforts. His signature sound is all over this record and to me Sevendust now once again sound like Sevendust if you get my drift.

The one thing that has always caught my attention with Sevendust is their melodic hook laden choruses in the midst of a wall of rock and straight away this album delivers those and I'm so very happy. It's when 'Unraveling' the first single from the album starts that I'm really well and truly hooked; Lajon (No relation to Reese) Witherspoon's voice is so suited to his band and in no way does it ever sound like he is struggling with a low register or belting out a massive chorus. He's truly one of the best rock singers out there.

Ooh 'Karma'. This is a great song. The almost mechanical sounding underlying music here builds up to absolutely kick my ass, see what I mean?! Where did that come from? This could actually be my favourite on the album so far. Yep. Try and top that Sevendust. Um hello!! Dueling guitar solo? Awesome.

I think I want to talk about the drums for a minute. They sound huge! Nice work, always great to hear a kick drum you can feel.

Ok back to it. Well hello new ringtone! The beginning of 'Nowhere' will work perfectly. If not a ringtone at least for my alarm. Seriously I wish some of my old favourite 80's bands would still write choruses... Thankyou Sevendust. Oh no. The end is coming... Oh wait. It's track 10. Still 2 to go but thanks for the warning guys. Great great guitar solo in this one. I also love guitar solos, have I ever mentioned that?!

And as the end now comes with 'strong arm broken' the heaviest track on the album I am content and I honestly can't fault the album because I've been so pumped to hear it. They know how to make a killer rock album and the 5 guys together really gel which is why the return of Lowery I feel has lifted their spirits and they have delivered close to my favourite album of the year so far.

Seven dusts out of 7

In what is turning out to be a massive month or two for lovers of all things glam and sleaze, Swedish natives Crashdiet, against the odds, return with arguably their most complete album yet. Following the loss of original singer Dave Lepard in 2005 to suicide, the band returned in 2007 with newly appointed singer Oliver Twisted and delivered the more experimental and darker ‘The Unattractive Revolution’. The union with Oliver didn’t last and he headed back to the ranks of ‘Reckless Love’. Faced with the prospect of finding another singer, in a twist of fate, the band ended up with former ‘Jailbait‘ singer Simon Cruz who was originally in the band’s sights after the passing of Lepard.

Setting the scene for what’s to come with Crashdiet circa 2010, the razor sharp riffs and pounding rhythm section on opening track ‘Armageddon’ are perfectly complimented by new vocalist Cruz, (who I shall refer to more later in the review). A return to the band’s sleaze rock roots the opening track certainly hints at, and the following track ‘So Alive’ certainly confirms this. A Motley Crue like riff kicks off the track, but then it’s the band’s new singer Simon Cruz to properly introduce himself with almost banshee like wailing before he rip’s through the opening lines “it’s midnight out for blood, let’s make a big toast to world domination, no rat’s out to fed”...when a song has lyrics such as this, you certainly need a vocalist to convey the rawness and Cruz certainly does! For fans of a pre-chorus, the one in this song is monstrous, as the gang like vocals of the chorus.

Lead single ‘Generation Wild’ is a killer bombastic anthem that had me hook, line and sinker from the opening guitar riff courtesy of Martin Sweet. This is one of the best HARD ROCK songs I have heard in all of the 2000’s....I don’t need to say anymore! 20 years ago ‘Youth Gone Wild’’ was the anthem of rebellion and now we have the sequel. Speaking of killer, be sure to check out the film clip to this song below...it’s so killer it has even been banned by MTV Sweden! ‘Rebel’ shifts up a higher gear and is frenetic and raw and the gang shouting vocals in the chorus has an old school metal kinda vibe along the lines of Judas Priest, WASP and early Crue.

Whilst musically ‘Save Her’ displays a more melodic side to the band, lyrically it is one of the albums darker tracks, “sweet lips around a loaded gun, pulls the trigger and the bullet won”. One of my favourite tracks on the album, it also displays a more “polished” production sound that is throughout the album. In stark contrast to ‘Save Her’, ‘Down With The Dust’, musically is the probably the heaviest on the album. A great track to showcase how the band have evolved musically, with some pretty cool guitar riffs and a blistering guitar solo.

‘Native Nature’ is Crashdiet at it’s sleaziest, a track that will no doubt be popular in the live set and is another where Cruz can spit and snarl till his hearts content! ‘Chemical’ on the other hand is a song that will probably be a grower for many people, but you will be addicted once it gets a hold of you, pardon the pun! If the song doesn’t grab you upon first listen, then be sure to stick it out until at least the 2.05 minute mark.....then it kicks in!!

‘Bound To Fall’ is a little more restrained in all accounts, but don’t get me wrong, it is still a hard rocking song! As with a few other tracks on this album, it displays where Crashdiet are at in 2010, a band who has now progressed and has more than just straight out sleaze rock in it’s arsenal. Which perfectly leads into the almost epic closing track ‘Beautiful Pain’, a fitting way to close the album. Whilst the chorus is simplistic featuring just repetition of the words ‘beautiful pain’, the rest of the track is anything but simplistic, with some intricate arrangements and an almost majestic like quality.

In a time when sleaze/glam/hard rock is as popular as it ever has been in recent years and with an image and attitude to match the quality of this release, ‘Generation Wild’ well and truly propels Crashdiet back as the leaders of not only the sleaze rock genre, but as one of the more exciting hard rock bands on the planet.

As a Kiss fan I have always maintained an interest in Ex-members solo careers. Bruce Kulick has been no exception. Bruce had been the most active member of the Kiss family over the almost 15 years since his departure, releasing solo albums as well as a touring member of Grand Funk Railroad and ESP. His latest solo CD BKIII has been almost 5 years in the making, and has a wide range of guest performers to make this album a very appealing package on paper.

I was a bit hesitant on whether it would deliver though, but I must admit he has done really well with it. The CD starts off with Kulick handling the lead vocals on “Fate”, a blistering number with many references to Kulicks tenure with Kiss within the lyrics – a really great kick off track. Next up is “Ain’t Gonna Die” with Gene Simmons handling the vocals. This is one of my favourite songs on the disc as it instantly reminds me of the stellar Kiss “Revenge” CD, and Simmons and Kulick make a really great songwriting partnership.

Kulick’s Union partner in crime John Corabi is up next with the song “No Friend Of Mine”, Corabi is such an underrated songwriter and he and Kulick gel so well, the song stuck in my head for along time after the initial listens. Track 4 and first single off BKIII features none other than Gene’s son Nick on vocals. ‘Hand Of The King’ reminds me of Stone Temple Pilots, but with Nick’s Jim Morrison styled vocals thrown in. Wouldn’t have been my choice as single, but a very cool but dark track none the less.

Kulick handles the vocals on the next track “I’ll Survive”. The song recounts when Bruce was shot on the Sunset Strip a few years ago, but to me just doesn’t deliver the emotion needed to tell the story and the music is very dull and slow. The late Knack singer Doug Fieger’s last known recording “Dirty Girl” is my favourite track on the CD, its such a great up-tempo song, and should have been the first single for sure. Kulick again takes lead vocals on “Final Mile”. Its a great song, very well written, but to me, Kulick’s vocals do not do the song justice, his voice is more suited to the really gritty rock song. I think he should have found a female guest vocalist on this one.

Tobias Sammet from Edguy/Avantasia rips into “Im The Animal”. He is a great vocalist and song writer and really delivers the goods on this one, love the song a lot. Kulick is up again with “And I Know” which is just a phenomenal song, only just pipped by “Dirty Girl” as the standout. Bruce’s vocals really go well with this number, and I love the 80’s style gang backup vocals on it. Would really love to hear this one live. Toto guitar legend Steve Lukather duels with Kulick on the only instrumental “Between The Lines”, I’m not usually a fan of any instrumentals, but the two guitar heroes take you on a wild ride on this track, cool stuff. Closing out BKIII is the very Beatle-Esque song “Life”. A slower number with Kulick handling the lead, its a really great closer with lots of nice orchestration.

All in all Bruce really went all out to make this an All Star Affair and the songs really reflect some quality writing. I do wish he used less Kiss family members as his songs can stand on their own without Kiss. Hopefully it wont take as long to get a new CD from Bruce...

* Check out our interview with Bruce Kulick right here!

As much as that album slotted the band right in amongst the modern Swedish sleaze-glam frontier comprising the likes of Hardcore Superstar, Gemini 5, Vains of Jenna and Crashdiet.....it was also as much a throwback to the cocksure youthful rock delivered by the likes of Warrant and Skid Row in their prime. A few years on and plentiful touring under their belt with guitarist Andy Dawson replacing original guitarist Vic Zino (who left in 2008 to join Hardcore Superstar), sees the band return with ‘New Religion’ on THE label Frontiers Records. Reading the press release for the album, lead singer Danny Rexon is quoted as saying "we set out with one goal, and that was to beat the living s**t out of “Loud Minority” with these new songs, and if you ask me, we've beaten it black and blue". Now that's some bold claims right there Danny, so just how did the band go?

Well, after having lived with this album now for a good few weeks, I have to say the boys have certainly delivered on that promise. But....on the first few spins you could be forgiven for not immediately (and I do emphasis immediately) hearing those instant anthems such as ‘Dr Hollywood’, "Make Ends Meet" or ‘Heroes Are Forever’ that ‘Loud Minority’ delivered. But let me make it clear, ‘New Religion’ is a much, much stronger album overall with every song being superior to those on ‘Loud Minority’ save for the three songs just mentioned!

‘Rock And A Hard Place’ opens the album and with production again courtesy of Chris Laney, you can be sure of one thing and that's a massive arena rock sound with monster gang backing vocals reminding of a cross between Mutt Lange's most famous work and Kane Roberts killer ‘Saints and Sinners’ album which was produced by none other than ‘Sir Arthur Payson’ aka Desmond Child. ‘My Medicine (R.O.C.K)’ with it's ‘Unskinny Bop’ styled riffery and ‘Lets Get Rocked’ type breakdown is an honest attempt at a stadium rock anthem dedicated to the virtues of rock n roll, but this is not your usual balls to the wall Crazy Lixx anthem, this one is driven by acoustic guitars in the pre chorus!!

‘21 Till I Die’ is where the album shifts up a gear, a track that is destined to become a live and fan favourite...this is one fist pumping ANTHEM of rebellion if I have ever heard one. I also have to make special mention of the awesome drumming on this track courtesy of Joey Cirera. The keyboard drenched ‘Blame It On Love’ sees the band heading into a much more melodic/AOR direction ala Sweden's greatest band at the moment H.E.A.T, with the Crazy Lixx boys delivering the goods and then some. This song is smokin' with awesome guitar work courtesy of Andy Dawson, some great restrained vocals in the verses topped off with one of the bands catchiest chorus’s ever.

The moody and brooding ‘Children Of The Cross’ showcases Danny Rexon's development as a songwriter and lyricist, a song covering child abuse mixed with religion "love taken, god forsaken, failed by the one they relied on, they are they children of the cross". Remember what I said before about this album lacking the IMMEDIATE anthems upon first listen. Well this track is a prime example...give this track the repeated listens that it begs for and then maybe you too would also go as far as saying this is very close to being the ultimate Crazy Lixx song. It’s going to take some cracking songs to oust this from my Top 10 songs of the year and it’s only February.....

Snapping us back to reality is the one-two punch of ‘Witching Hour’ and ‘Lock Up Your Daughter’, which are the rocking anthems the band is best known for, followed by the knockout blow of ‘She's Mine‘ one of those instantly fun rock songs, with an 80's rock guitar intro that’s reminiscent of a cross between The Cars, Rick Springfield and Bryan Adams. With lines like "everybody's want's a piece of my candy, all the boys want to go for a ride"...you know what to expect with this song, but did you expect a rollicking piano and horn section??

Now we all love a great "cigarette lighter love song" don't we....and ‘What Of Our Love’ is an absolute monster. A collaboration between chief songwriter Danny Rexon and guitarist Andy Dawson, this heart wrenching ballad does not mess with the tried and tested power ballad winning formula, but why should it. If this was the 80‘s, then this would be Top 10 material without a doubt. The rocker ‘Voodoo Woman‘ closes off the album, but by this stage the band has more than delivered on it’s promise to beat the living shit out of ‘Loud Minority’ and this track only really serves to rub further salt into the wounds.

With the major label backing of Frontiers Records and delivering a killer album it seems that 2010 is the year Crazy Lixx will stamp their authority on the hard rock scene worldwide. ‘All you need is, all you need is, a little R.O.C.K........’ New Religion’ is my medicine people and maybe it could be yours too?

* Check out our interview with Crazy Lixx guitarist Andy Dawson right here!

Having grown up loving equally the pop and hard rock that came out of the 80's, there have been many times that I have wondered what some of the classic 80's pop songs would sound like done as more rocked up versions. Never once however did I envisage hearing a project as ambitious and defying as what Rock Sugar have released with ‘Reimaginator’.

So what makes you some "Rock Sugar" exactly? Well take one pop song from the 80's, mix in a hard rock song from the same era and every so often throw in an extra song or two for good measure, then over a CD of 13 tracks, feature no less than 30 of these classic’ songs! Sounds a simple concept in theory, right?? Well no...listening to ‘Reimaginator’ you realise that it's far easier said than done! Now don't take this the wrong way....this album is pure KILLER from start to finish. What I mean is that the prodigious talents of those involved in Rock Sugar should not be underestimated in playing a large part of the success in pulling off this album. Lesser bands may attempt such an album and fail miserably....

Part of the mystique and expectation when listening to this album is the sheer unexpectedness of what lies in store with these songs, so we won't spoil it all by revealing every single minute detail in this review......please read on. First track is the complete sacrilege of ‘Don’t Stop The Sandman’ where the crushing riffs of Metallica's ‘Enter Sandman’ are blended seemlessly with the sublime melodicism of Journey's classic ‘Don’t Stop Believin’. You said what.....yes that's right I said Metallica and Journey. But that's essentially the whole foundation of ‘Reimaginator’, it works "because pop rocks".

‘We Will Kickstart Your Rhapsody’ sees adrenalin fuelled moments from Queen and Motley Crue flipped on their head to create the ultimate fist pumping, high octane sports action sequence anthem. Where is "Wide World Of Sports" when you need it? As for ‘Crazy Girl’, well if you thought Metallica and Journey was sacrilege, then what would you think Ozzy Osbourne wrangling with Rick Springfield?? Not surprising to me, it's the Rick Springfield classic that comes out the victor given the Rock Sugar treatment.

The epic, ‘Here Comes The Fool You Wanted’ along with album closer ’Dreaming Of A Whole Lot Of Breakfast’ are the songs that exhibit the sheer brilliance of some of the arrangements of these songs.....words don't do these songs justice, just go listen to them! All the essential trademark elements of the original songs have been seemlessley included into these new versions. Even lyrics have clever moments where there are literary trade offs. But it doesn't just end there, in some cases the band has managed to stamp their own authoritative interpretation on songs, making the songs their own - check ‘Heaven And Heaven’.

The only time in my life I have found myself singing Madonna is upon hearing ‘Shook Me Like A Prayer’....one of the standout tracks on the album. ‘Strait To Rock City’....well you can check this one out for yourself as you wouldn't believe me if I told you the pairing on this song, but how are those Mutt Lange'esque backing vocals!!! What do you get when you combine 3 of the most recognised rock guitar classics from the 80's....’Prayin For A Sweet Weekend’ that's what! This track is a monster!! First they made me sing along to a Madonna track and now I think I have to confess to a few friends of mine that after hearing this, i do agree that Livin’ On A Prayer may indeed be one of the best rock anthems the world has ever heard! But it took Rock Sugar to convince me....

For a band that has spent the last 20 years on a deserted island (www.rocksugarband.com for the full story) these guys have lost none of the potential they showed back in 1989 when they threatened to take the world by storm. They sure know how to play their instruments, sing till their lungs explode and tweak the knobs in the studio to deliver a rock sound that will blast your speakers to smithereens! But then again, some of us expect nothing less from Harnell, Duran and Track who make up Rock Sugar.

For those of you who dare let Rock Sugar violate your musical senses, beliefs and prejudices you will be rewarded with an unexpectedly awesome album and a sure fire winner to unveil to all your rock loving friends!!

Don't stop believin'....because pop rocks!!

Please check out the banner below for all you need to know about purchasing the album!

OK, let’s get this out of the way up front, I’m a Keel fan, a BIG Keel fan, In fact they are one of my all time favourite bands.
Ron Keel first erupted onto the Hard Rock scene in Los Angeles in 1983 fronting the band Steeler, a band that would also launch the career for a young guitarist by the name of Yngwie J. Malmsteen.
After releasing only the one album with Steeler, Ron Keel re-grouped and formed a new band under his namesake KEEL. KEEL went on to enjoy moderate success including high rotation on MTV and US Radio with there anthem “The Right To Rock” as well as lesser successful singles “Because The Night” and “Somebody’s Waiting”, but by 1989 and 5 albums later KEEL called it a day and the members went their separate ways.

Fast Forward to 2010 and KEEL have re-united and released their 7th album “The Streets Of Rock N Roll”, the first new full studio album since 1987’s stellar Self Titled “KEEL” album, being that “Back In Action” (1996) was a collection of re-mixed recordings of unreleased songs & alternate versions and that “Larger Than Live” (1989) only featured 6 new studio songs and 6 live tracks.

Things kick off in typical KEEL fashion like they had been frozen in 1989 with the awesome opener “Hit The Ground Running” featuring that familiar 80’s Metal guitar tone riffing its way through the verse with Ron delivering his gruff yet still melodic vocals over the top, showing he still has the chops some 20 years later. Marc Ferrari and Bryan Jay’s tasteful and melodic guitar work shines through on the title track “Streets Of Rock N Roll” a great melodic rocker. “Come Hell Or High Water” is reminiscent of “The Right To Rock” era KEEL as it has a harder edge and a faster pace to it.
Listening to the album there’s no denying Ron Keel’s vocals have held up well through the years and he puts in a great performance on the ballad “Does Anybody Believe”. “ Push & Pull” starts off great, with an excellent verse but is let down by a fairly bland chorus, making it one of the weaker tracks on the album. Fortunately where “Push & Pull” lets the side down with it’s chorus , “No More Lonely Nights” is right there to make up for it, a classic example of KEEL at their very best, cranking out a melodic hard rock anthem, one of the strongest tracks on the album for sure. “Devil May Care (But I Don’t)” sounds like KEEL channeling AC/DC and while it’s not a weak song, it’s not a strong song either. “Looking For A Good Time” sounds like it could have come from 1989’s “Larger Than Live” album, as it’s slightly more melodic and has a bit of that good time vibe similar to “Fool For A Pretty Face”.
Where as the track “Gimme That” is all business and a straight forward brooding rocker. KEEL have always been patriotic to their American homeland in their lyrics and the song “Hold Steady” follows that tradition as it salutes the efforts of the US troops for defending their nation, the song itself is another great melodic rock anthem in typical KEEL form. The track “Live” features an upbeat riff similar to “I Said The Wrong Thing To The Right Girl” from the 1987 self titled album, but the chorus is much more mellow and doesn’t quite “Live” up to it’s title.

Almost all of the songs on “Streets Of Rock N Roll” feature a massive chorus with a wall of vocals and album closer “Brothers In Blood” is no exception, a great stomping rhythm from drummer Dwain Miller, another great rock anthem and one of the strongest tracks on the album. A great way to close out what is overall an excellent album and a welcome return from KEEL.
An album that has certainly created a buzz amongst melodic rock circles and comes with high expectations is the release from the project titled W.E.T. “W.E.T” stands for the bands comprised of in this project, Robert Säll, guitarist of Work of Art, Erik Martensson of Eclipse and Jeff Scott Soto, singer of Talisman. With these 3 individuals being part of the Frontiers Records family who had the vision of putting together two of the most promising Swedish songwriting talents around (Säll and Martensson) with one of the most highly regarded singers in the genre, Jeff Scott Soto.

With the 3 sharing a love for great arena rock, big melodic hooks, fiery guitars and the feel for magical melodies.....does the album deliver on the weight of expectations? Well the short answer is Y.E.S it certainly does. Right from the outset, it needs to be acknowledged that the masterminds behind this are Martensson and Sall who handle virtually all the songwriting and production duties. The influence of Soto's killer vocals throughout cant be underestimated, but essentially he brings the voice and the big name.

The trio of “Brothers In Arms”, “Invincible” and “One Love” open up the album in cracking style, with each being pure melodic bliss, featuring blistering guitar solos, drenched in keyboards and melodies and hooks that will remain in your head long hours after the songs have finished. For those familiar with Eclipse’s release “Are You Ready To Rock” from 2008, these opening three songs will have you wetting your pants....pardon the pun!

The ballads "Comes Down Like Rain" and "One Day At A Time" are the albums grandiose power ballads that are as much an example of the exceptional contemporary, production displayed throughout the album as it is an example of the sheer combined brilliance of those involved in W.E.T. "Running From The Heartache" one of the albums definite highlights draws on more of a classic AOR influence as does"My Everything" whilst "I'll Be There" continues the AOR vein albeit with a slightly heavier more European feel.

When the album takes a heavier, less melodic turn, such as on tracks like "Damage Is Done" and "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" some of the magic is lost, however maybe that's just due to the high standards the rest of the album sets?

For those who never got the opportunity to hear JSS sing with Journey or wonder what might of been if that association had of continued onto recorded material, then album closer "if I Fall" will answer those questions. In the albums press release JSS us quoted as saying said “Quite simply, this is the Journey album that could have been had I continued with them!”. Well whilst this may not apply to the album in its entirety, unquestionably this track captures Journey at it’s finest, from the Perry stylings of Soto, right through to the Schon’esque guitar solo’s. What a way to close the album!!

With the closing of another decade virtually upon us, W.E.T has certainly set a standard for modern day melodic rock. Whilst not matching the magic of H.E.A.T’s debut from last year, or Danger Danger’s “Revolve” from this year, it is certainly up there as being one of the premier melodic rock releases in recent years. For Robert Sall and Erik Martensson, the pressure is well and truly now on for what they can deliver next with their respective bands, Work Of Art and Eclipse!

Spending most of 2008 touring the world on ‘The Crimson Idol’ world tour that included Australia, it certainly came as a bit of a surprise when this new W.A.S.P album dropped back in October. Particularly when some may of considered that last years world tour, paying homage to arguably the best W.A.S.P album and one of the best concept albums of all time ‘The Crimson Idol’ would be Blackie’s swansong. But here we are, now reviewing a brand new album ‘Babylon’.

'Babylon' Is being promoted as being themed around biblical visions of "The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse” as evidenced by the image depicted on the album cover. As with recent offerings from Lawless, this album certainly continues on with the more mature lyrical subject matter, with the shock rock days of songs like ‘Blind In Texas’ or ‘Animal, Fuck Like A Beast’ long long gone.

Clocking in at 9 songs and about 45 minutes, the album is a pretty easy album to digest and I have to say is far more enjoyable that I initially gave it credit for. What do they say about not judging a book by it’s cover? The opening two punch of ‘Crazy’ (the bastard child song of the band’s seminal ‘Wild Child’ perhaps??) and ‘Live To Die Another Day’ certainly went about dispelling my initial preconceptions about the album, featuring classic metallic W.A.S.P guitar riffs, trademark Blackie Lawless vocals and soaring anthemic chorus’s.

With it’s galloping guitars, and driving intensity, ‘Babylon’s Burning‘ is clearly the albums highlight, almost matching some of the classic metal moments from ‘The Crimson Idol‘ album. “Listen close to hooves you hear, are thunders coming dread” and instantly you are planted into the midst of fire and thundering hooves of the album cover. Maybe this connection to fire and babylon burning is as much connection as is needed for including a cover of Deep Purple’s ‘Burn’ on the album? In it’s own right it’s a pretty smokin’ version, but with only 9 songs in total and it being one of two covers, it is does leave you feeling a little shortchanged. Another W.A.S.P classic like ‘Babylon’s Burning’, now that would of been far more appealing!

For all of the killer metal moments from the W.A.S.P back catalogue, Blackie certainly can write a killer ballad, with ‘Forever Free’ being up there as one of my alltime W.A.S.P songs. ‘Into The Fire’ from the new album harks into ballad direction, whilst retaining a distinct heaviness, however certainly doesn’t match the magic of something like ‘Forever Free’.

‘Thunder Red’ and ‘Seas Of Fire’ continue the fire and burning theme, and along with‘Godless Run’ return the album to a state of heaviness, however suffer from a little bit of sameness. By no means are the tracks terrible, they just don’t quite match the intensity of the opening three songs. Closing the album with a cover of Chuck Berry’s ‘Promised Land’ made more famous by Elvis is certainly an interesting choice to close with. Once again, it’s certainly not a terrible song, it’s inclusion on the album is a little bemusing.

For existing W.A.S.P fans who have stuck with Blackie up until this point, then ‘Babylon’ is certainly an album worth exploring and matches recent W.A.S.P efforts, however if you are new to the band then I suggest starting with the classics, rather than jumping on board here.

Why refer to Spring Break celebrations you ask, well that shall be revealed a little bit later. Say what they will about Nickelback those “too cool for school” media outlets....what you can’t take away from them is TWO sold out shows in Melbourne at the 16,000 capacity Rod Laver Arena.

Opening song “Something In Your Mouth” set the tone of the night with a blaze of fireworks and pyro and a big massive rock sound and the band didn’t let up from then on in! Pumping out smash hit “Photograph” early in the set was an inspired move....but above all, it proved just how many hit singles the band actually has. Using the massive video screen to great effect during this song, a montage of photos of the band members from days gone flashed up on the screen throughout the song.

Certainly a man not afraid of talking, Chad Kroger threw in banter between almost every song....at times this broke up the continuity of the set when you just wanted them to go straight into another cranking rock song. But referring to the spring break analogy above, during their 2 hour set, it was just like being at one giant big spring break party, with Chad Kroger as our host. Half way through the set the band brought out virtually their entire crew and fired t-shirts into the crowd from missile launchers and threw cups of beer into the hot and sweaty crowd. Sure, it’s all been done before, but who cares....the crowd came to rock and that’s what they and the band did!

The stage setup had it all, none better illustrated than during the crushing drum solo from Daniel Adair, where his drumkit became elevated and rotated around the stage. 10 minute drum solo’s aren’t exactly everybody’s cup of tea, but this guy can seriously play! Soundwise, it was faultless, it was a massively produced sound, but importantly you still knew you were at a live rock show!

As far as the setlist goes, it was pretty much a greatest hits, with the only song springing to mind that wasn’t featured being “Never Again”. “Rockstar” got the treatment in acoustic style which was awesome, but even more awesome during this song was displaying images on the giant screen of the biggest names of rock, everyone from Bon Jovi to the Scorpions to Lynyrd Skynyrd, they were all there. “Too Bad” closed out the set proper in a hail of fire, with the band returning for an encore that consisted of “Someday” and “Animals”. In a scene that reminded of New Years Eve celebrations, our lasting image of this awesome rock show was a fire and pyro storm that lasted for minutes! How much this show costs to put together each night...god only knows!

For those of us in attendance, what we witnessed was one of the greatest stadium rock shows and productions surely going around today.

I love new music and I particularly like it when I have no prior knowledge of a band as I have no perceptions going in to the album other than track names. Domenica out of Canada have me intrigued with what I can expect with titles such as 'Music', 'I Love My Gun' , 'Vampires' and 'Porno State Of Mind' so let's see... I give you 'The Luxury'

'Music' the opener boasts a chorus saying 'I'll never turn off the music' good start as I didn't want to turn it off. A great vibe to the opener but hang on track 2 kicks in, a much more fast paced rocker called 'what goes around' I love this one. Singer Bekki has a kick ass rock voice and I can't wait to hear what the rest of the album delivers. 'Above Me' is the first single lifted from the album and I can tell why. It's catchy, fresh and boasts a great middle 8 ooh and a guitar solo. Sold. Not sure if I'm sold on track 4 yet, musically killer, great guitar riff. Lyrically unsure. It will win me over hopefully, unfortunately this was 'I Love My Gun' a track I was looking forward to but up to now it's the one I'd skip. It's not bad, just not an instant grabber. But hey I'm subconsciously tapping my foot, so what do I know?! Oh hello 'No Matter What You Say' now this is my favourite so far. Killer chorus. Easily a single if required.

'Lady Like Me' hits a groove remnant of the late 70s early 80s rock style. I wonder why she'd be going out fishing?! Oh wait. I get metaphors. I like this one. I'm only half way through the album and I'm 90% sold. Great sign. Let's see what the rest of the album can bring...

We're getting a little industrial now. I'd like 'The Long Road' to build. It's a little flat so far and hasn't grabbed me yet, vocally her voice is sublime but if I put a treat out do you think it'll come get it and get heavy in a minute?! Here songy songy songy... Ok so didn't like that treat.

Ahhh you were just waiting for the next track. See this is 'Vampires' it had to be heavy!! Much better. Wait, I need to write a letter. Dear Twilight, why didn't you use this song on your original soundtrack? It's clearly awesome. Please let me know and can I also ask for a signed picture of the werewolf guy for my fiancé? Thanks. Love your movies. Troy. There, that'll show em. This song is awesome. I love the sound that Domenica have made their own, I can't even compare it to anyone. It's unique. That's an awesome thing in music these days so big kudos.

'Blackmoon' is a safe track, perfect for track 9. It's not going to change the world but it's good. 'Free' is the third track on the album to be co written and feature Marcos Curiel from P.O.D. And this one is an acoustic driven number and a really good one at that. I'm such a sucker for an acoustic guitar. It's moving and at times haunting. This one is up there for me as close to the best on the album. Well done. Whoa. No mucking around there straight back into it as we hit 'Luxury' every guitar is turned up to 11 and is rockin hard. 'Porno State Of Mind' is solid. I don't love it but it's a foot tapper with it's Iron Maidenesque harmony guitar solo.

We're up to the final track 'Sailaway' a fair way to round out the album, strings are always a seller with me and we even get a violin trading licks with a guitar in the solo. I love it. Great ending to a great new album. Yeah at times it's a little sketchy, but that's just me being picky and anyway don't take my word for it. Do yourself a favour, check out Domenica now before they get bigger so you can say 'i liked them before they were cool' that's what I'll be doing.

Who am I talking about? Well, I'm talking about Orianthi. Great name and in no way related to the Japanese paper folding technique. What Orianthi is is a talent to be reckoned with. After seeing her play guitar on the Michael Jackson documentary 'This is it' I thought she couldn't get any better. Mistaken. Orianthi can sing and sing well. Her debut album 'Believe' is a collection of great power pop/rock tracks with choruses catchier than a trout at a trout farm and some seriously killer guitar work.

From the opening track 'According To You' I knew I was in for a treat. And after that perfect power pop song it just doesn't slow down. The co writes on this album are awesome, names such as Desmond Child, Andreas Carlsson, Ronan Keating and Steve Vai make their stamp known. What is even more impressive is that Orianthi co writes all but 2 tracks. This girl has come out of nowhere and is here to show us how it's done. The title track 'Believe' is amazing. It's my favourite on the album and can easily be yours after only 1 listen. The polished album is produced by Howard 'I can do no wrong' Benson and his mastery is all over this album. Not to mention Chris Lord-Alge on mixing duties. This girl has some friends!!

This album doesn't slow down, it's choc full of riffs, solos and at times a bluesy almost country feel. 'Untogether' is the first time the album hasn't kicked my ass 5 times over. It has that great power pop chorus and feel but it's very safe and an obvious choice for a single. I like it but I preferred the previous ball tearer that was on prior to this track. When we hit 'Highly Strung' the one and only instrumental on the album we get to hear Orianthi do what she does best. Absolutely shred on the guitar. What I love about this track is the trade off between her and guest Steve Vai as we all know that cat can play so to listen to Orianthi keep up and trade licks is killer.

Power Ballads RULE!! 'God only knows' is perfect. Very heartfelt and personal. An amazing track to stick at number 11 to finish the album but the album is that good that it had to go somewhere.

Moral of the story, this album is awesome. Orianthi is a major talent. I truly hope she gets a go in this industry as she could truly take the world by storm. In fact wanna put a wager on it?!

Check her album 'Believe' out you won't be disappointed!

Some 15 years ago now, Australian rock band “The Poor” blasted onto the scene with their rock anthem “More Wine Waiter Please”. A Top 10 hit in Australia, follow up single “Poison” was also a massive hit, catapulting the bands debut album “Who Cares” into the Top 10 of the album chart. At a time when grunge had swept the cupboards bare of more traditional “hard rock” The Poor’s brand of raw blues based hard rock found themselves making waves on rock radio in the USA. Two years of solid touring around the USA, Australia, Japan and Europe had the band supporting the likes of The Angels, AC/DC, KISS, The Scorpions, Alice In Chains & Van Halen. What followed was a couple of EP’s/singles, but by the end of the 90’s the band had all but disappeared.

In 2008 the band re-emerged and supported legendary metal band WASP on their Australian tour. Obviously inspired by these shows, the band return in 2009 with a brand new release titled “Round 1”, a collection of seven brand new tracks, as well some previously unreleased/demo songs. For those familiar with The Poor, on “Round 1” you will be pleased to know that not much has changed. The Poor still sound like The Poor and that’s a fact!!

Opening track ‘Kill My Faith’ features those familiar bass heavy stomping guitar riffs and the trademark growl from vocalist Skenie. The production is very raw which is a theme that continues throughout the album, but afterall, that is what The Poor is all about! ‘Death Of Me’ draws in a bit of a modern influence and even reminds at times of someone like Buckcherry, probably my favourite track on the album. ‘Last Laugh’ sees the band starting to infuse a bit more of the hooks for which they captured throughout that killer debut album ‘Who Cares’ and the cool slide guitar riff and chorus vocals are particularly infectious. ‘No Ones Home’ draws on more of a blues influence, however lacks the spark of the opening few tracks. But that can’t be said for ‘Prisoner Of Fools’ which has energy in bundles! The most aggressive and heaviest of the new tracks, it shows that the band still has plenty of fight left yet. As close to a ballad you are likely to get from The Poor, ‘Don’t Know What You’re Missing’ closes the new tracks in fine style.

Rounding out the album is a nice little piece of Australian rock history featuring 3 demo’s the band recorded back in 1999/2000 at the late Billy Thorpe’s Electric Mountain studio’s in Sydney. Being demo’s the songs show where the band was headed with regards to a follow up to ‘Who Cares’ and offer a nice little piece of history for the die hard fans.

There is enough on ‘Round 1’ to suggest that The Poor still have something to offer the Aussie rock scene and I already await Round 2 to see what the band come up with. But to experience The Poor, one needs to experience the blood, sweat and beers the band shed up on the stage, which you can do in the coming weeks on their Aussie tour, which also includes some shows with fellow Aussie pub rock legends, The Screaming Jets!!

An album which he refers as "my best ever, my masterpiece".

In classic Tramp style, the album opens up with the autobiographical epic rocker "All Of My Life". Musically it takes "More To Life Than This" to a whole new level, whilst lyrically could be dubbed the sequel to "Endless Highway" off second solo album "Recovering The Wasted Years". On "Endless Highway" Tramp wondered "will I ever make it home, to the place where I was born and the town where I grew up". Well, "All Of My Life" tells that story. "I have been gone all of my life, my heart and soul for rock n roll, I gave up everything, I wanna go back, I wanna go home....". Without doubt, this is the definitive Mike Tramp song in every way possible.

Starting with a muted guitar riff "Gonna Get Back To You" explodes into the dawning of a new musical chapter for Tramp. A fresh and contemporary slice of rock, laden with a killer chorus and harmonies, it a song that demands high radio rotation. In a similar way, the upbeat rock and Beatlesque pop of "Come On" has a distinct European feel and also seems destined to stamp itself as a radio hit having been released as part of the Danish TV promo campaign for the new album. This is Tramp like you have never heard before and distinctly comes across as a songwriter who has finally found his "home".

In stark contrast, the musical sparseness of "Anymore" and the haunting "When She Cries" certainly amplify the impact of the deeply personal and almost confessional nature of their lyrics. Never one to shy away from baring his life in his songs, these are songs which some listeners may also associate with in a lyrical sense. "Highway" is another classic Tramp sounding melodic rock song and could easily have been lifted from "Recovering The Wasted Years" or "More To Life Than This".

Co-produced with fellow Dane, guitarist Soren Andersen, from a production sense, this is Tramp's most complete yet, whether it be giving balls to the riff oriented rock of "No Tomorrow", allowing songs to breath such as "The Road" or providing atmosphere to the acoustic driven and enchanting "Wiseman". The latter two songs incidentally feature some fantastic backing vocals which are in fact a highlight throughout this whole album. Speaking of vocals, Tramp's voice has never sounded better and the album also has a distinct band feel throughout, with nothing but the best in musicianship.

In "Sunshine" Tramp has in a way created a modern day version of the Thin Lizzy classic "Sarah" and for me is one of the album's highlights. The lyrically reflective "Between Good And Bad" is the albums big rock moment and could easily of appeared on "Return Of the Pride" with it's 70's rock inspired guitar riffs. Perhaps by specific intent, "Lay Down Your Guns" closes the album in a fashion that does indeed deliver the feeling of an "old fallen apart circus", which Tramp described himself in explaining the concept behind "Mike Tramp & The Rock n Roll Circuz". A very loose feeling song, clocking in at over 6 minutes it ebs and flows before eventually ending with an ad lib to fade of "la la la la's" and guitar.

For those of you who like myself, enthusiastically embrace with open arms his solo work, you will be rewarded with Mike Tramp's defining moment, his finest work ever in a career spanning over 32 years. "Mike Tramp & The Rock N Roll Circuz" an album delivered in the same way as the life he has lived - "with no limit's, rules or compromise".

Those outside of Denmark can pick up a copy via the following website: http://www.targetshop.dk/miketramp

You can check out our feature interview with Mike Tramp right HERE!!!

Taking their raw, sleazy, punk inspired attitude to a whole new level, Swedish born, but now Los Angeles based Vains Of Jenna deliver their ball tearing 2nd studio album ‘The Art Of Telling Lies’. Since their debut album ‘Lit Up-Let Down’ the growth in the band both musically and from a songwriting point of view is significant and can largely be attributed to the hundreds of shows the band has played throughout both the USA and Europe in between albums.

Opening track ‘Everybody Loves You When You’re Dead’ is a four to the floor rocker featuring musically everything Vains Of Jenna fans would be familiar with from the band. Albeit with a slightly more polished and fuller big rock sound courtesy of producer Brent Woods (former member of Wildside and Vince Neil Band). A cracking way to start off the album!

Just two songs in is all it took for lead singer Lizzy DeVine to stamp his authority on the CD with his snarling vocals. On ‘Mind Pollution’ hear him tear through the chorus lines of “I wanna break free, this shit is killing me” to hear what I am talking about and then wait for the 2.26minute mark if you are still not convinced! Whilst the song adopts the quiet verse, loud verse kind of approach of modern rock, the track is one of the most aggressive on the CD.

Tackling the Tom Petty classic ‘Refugee’, a song that is no stranger to the bands live set, the band stay faithful to the original and turn it into the harder edged rock song I realise it has been crying out for, importantly without giving it the full blown punk rock attitude! With massive chorus vocal chants and an infectious little guitar melody line, ‘I Belong To Yesterday’ is another modern rock styled track with some nice pop sensibilities.

‘Paper Heart’ and ‘Better Off Alone’ scale things back a bit and these “epics” see the band displaying just how far they have come in terms of songwriting, song structure and musicianship with every member getting their opportunity to shine on these songs. These tracks are certainly not “power ballads” and actually remind me of a modern day Tesla epic type song, which for me is due to the vocals of Lizzy DeVine at times reminding of Tesla's Jeff Keith's soaring raspiness.

‘Get It On’ does just that with it's foot stomping riffs and kick ass punkish attitude and is no doubt a song that will set the crowd into a frenzy at a live show. The single ‘Enemy In Me’ may be familiar to many of you with it having appeared on MTV’s Jackass and Kat Von D’s ‘LA Ink’ TV shows. It's time to change things up a bit with the funky verses of ‘I Dont Care’ which lyrically is a nice segue into the title and closing track ‘The Art Of Telling Lies’ a song inspired by the concept of too many people in the world these days using the art of telling lies in their lives.

For a band who well and truly know and live the “long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll” ethos, Vains Of Jenna have certainly delivered the album that should announce them to the wider world of ROCK!

You can check out our feature interview with the bands drummer, Jacki Stone right HERE!!!

“Hope, a new beginning. Time, time to start living, like just before we died” and with those words opening up the bands new album ‘Black Gives Way To Blue’, so begins a new chapter for one of rock’s most influential artists of the modern era. With former singer Layne Staley succumbing to drug addiction over 7 years ago and it now being some 15 years ago since the band released their last studio album, the release of this, merely their fourth studio album, would come as a shock to many. In 2009, guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney and bass player Mike Inez are now joined by new vocalist William DuVall who you can read all about in our feature interview right here!

So what then have the band come up with in this release? Well the good news is that Black Gives Way To Blue features all the trademarks that we know and love about Alice In Chains. Grinding heavy sludgey guitar riffs, Jerry Cantrell’s familiar songwriting style, along with the co-vocalist trade off’s that were existent between Staley and Cantrell. And of course the $million question on everyones lips is obviously how does new singer William DuVall compare? Well I am not going to answer that specifically, but what I am going to say is that DuVall brings a definite sense of familiarity, whilst also more than adequately stamping himself as a quality singer in his own right.

Current single ‘Check My Brain’ will indeed imprint itself in your brain with it’s menacing guitar riff and catchy chorus line which proves yet again that almost any song with “California” in the chorus is pretty much always a winner. ‘Last Of My Kind’ is one of the albums most aggressive moments with DuVall’s vocals almost roaring their way through the speakers during the chorus, a track that he definitely makes his own.

‘Your Decision’ is simply a stunning track, in all of it’s majestic acoustic driven glory and if released as a single to radio, would almost certainly demand significant airplay. ‘When The Sun Rose Again’ treads a similarly acoustic path, albeit a darker, less melody infused one.

‘A Looking In View’ which features the whole band from a songwriting view and ‘Acid Bubble’ which both clock in at around 7 minutes each, are as close to the classic Alice In Chains sound as you could virtually get. Undoubtedly the album’s showpiece moments. Actually hold that thought and include ‘Private Hell’ in this bunch of classic Alice In Chains moments which channels what is probably my favourite AIC track in ‘Down In A Hole’ off ‘Dirt’.

If you have been reading the significant press about this album, then you couldn’t of but not learnt that none other than Sir Elton John makes a special guest appearance on the album’s title track ‘Black Gives Way To Blue’. On a track dedicated to the late Layne Staley, it was a fitting tribute to have Elton John guest on the track, as Layne’s very first live music experience was an Elton John concert. Just as the life of Layne Staley ended all too soon, so does this track at just over 3 minutes, ending with the words of “lay down, I’ll remember you.....”

Overwhelmingly, after living with this album now for nearly 2 weeks, one can’t help but marvel at the stunning return Alice In Chains have made despite all the odds stacked against them. The band bring back to music something that has been missing for the best part of the last 15 years and in doing so deliver what is undoubtedly one of the years finest metal/rock releases.

For former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley, the last 3 years have seen him fight his much publicised alcohol demons and spend this time clean and sober. What better way to celebrate 3 years of sobriety than with your first solo album in over 20 years, “Anomaly”. Being only a casual Kiss fan at best, I must say I was most intrigued to see what the “Space Ace” had up his sleeve with this album.

Opening track “Foxy & Free” from the outset features the unmistakable guitar riffing of Ace and vocally has a very distinct Kiss vibe to these casual Kiss listening ears :) A great rocking track to open up the album!
“Outer Space” and “Pain In The Neck” continue on in rocking style with their almost “stoner” guitar type riffs, but I am not totally sold on these tracks, with the tempo changes of the latter littered throughout the song making it an interesting listen.

Realising that here we are with yet another cover version of The Sweet’s “Fox On The Run”, my initial thought was why, oh why, oh why....but these thoughts quickly disappeared the more I heard of this killer version. Whilst it doesn’t really add anything new, the energy, vocal delivery and guitar work make for a great version!

The album features three instrumental tracks, with each displaying the fretboard pyrotechnics for which Ace is so renowned, not to mention a showcase for the sometimes complex songwriting and arrangements delivered by Ace on this album. The middle Eastern meets Led Zeppelin inspired semi instrumental “Genghis Khan” offers a complete change of direction for the album and a big thumbs up for this track! “Space Bear” is simply put a vintage Kiss sounding instrumental track, whilst the largely acoustic based “Fractured Quantum” is particularly enchanting with it’s melodic lead guitar work.

“Too Many Faces” is a catchy song with a killer guitar solo and adds yet another element of diversity to the album. Lyrically, the album often draws upon Ace’s personal experiences and battles of addiction, none more so than “A Little Below The Angels” which starts off with the hauntingly reflective lyrics of “alcohol, it was a friend of mine, it almost got me dead”. Without doubt this track is the albums majestic moment and with one can’t help but be drawn in by Ace’s endearing honesty.

In what is a big 2nd half of the year for Kiss fans, with Kiss’s Sonic Boom about to be released and the recent announcement of a new solo album from Bruce Kulick, time will tell which of these albums proves to be the most popular amongst Kiss fans. As for “Anomaly”, well the “Space Ace” has more than justified his relevance in the modern era as one of the most influential guitarists and performers in rock history.

Australian fans, be sure to catch Ace when he tours in the coming weeks!! Check his website and Myspace for all tour details.

Rising from the ashes of one of Australia’s longest running metal bands “Dungeon”, Sydney based “Lord” on their release “Set In Stone”, have certainly stamped their claim for the title of Australia’s leading metal exports along with the likes of “Black Majesty” and “Vanishing Point”. But I guess for the answer to that we will wait and see early next year what Black Majesty deliver with their new album!

Leaving no stone unturned, pardon the pun, “Set In Stone” is undoubtedly Lord’s most assured and musically diverse album yet. Kicking off the album in punishing style, “Redemption”, along with “The End Of Days” later on in the album, are musically brutal songs with a thunderous wall of guitars and rhythm section, but topped off with melodic chorus’s to somewhat balance out the extreme metal!

Bringing in more variety in terms of songwriting and delving into the AOR and traditional heavy rock side of things, tracks like “100 Reasons” and “Beyond The Light” whilst perhaps testing the bands loyal following of power metallers, will certainly help to bring a wider audience. With the guitars taking a more traditional heavy rock approach, the glorious pre-chorus of soaring vocal melodies, leading into AOR stadium rock inspired chorus’s which are killer stuff!

The epic metal of “Eternal Storm”, the aggressive and menacing verses of “Someone Else’s Dream” and the tragic tale of “Forever” highlight why vocalist Lord Tim was recently nominated in the category of Australia’s best metal vocalist, with these tracks displaying the range of vocal prowess possessed by Lord Tim.

Instrumentally, the album cannot be faulted with everyone in the band getting ample opportunity to shine and shine they do, particularly with some face melting guitar work from Lord Tim and Mark Furtner. But if that wasn’t enough, the band deliver the instrumental extravaganza of “Be My Guest” which does just that. Familiar with the names of Craig Goldy legendary guitarist from Dio, Glen Drover ex-guitarist of Megadeth and King Diamond, Felipe Andreoli bassist from progressive metallers Angra and Vanishing Point's Chris Porcianko?, well all appear on this track, along with former members of Dungeon and others.

Closing the album is my favourite track, the glorious “New Horizons” a keyboard laden, lyrically reflective dose of melodic saturated AOR, featuring a soaring guest guitar solo from the mighty Pete Lesperance of Harem Scarem fame. “New Horizons” indeed the band do go with this song...the video for which is featured on this page!

So there you have it...“Set In Stone” a truly rewarding album for both those existing Lord fans and potential new fans alike. Music is all about exploring “new horizons” and the variety on this album certainly allows one to do just this, as I myself have experienced.

Oh and if you have the Australian edition of this album, the closing track will no doubt cause controversy which is a cover of Kylie Minogue’s “On A Night Like This”, but to these ears, the Lord version works and works well!!

I've been a Living Colour fan for, wow, 20 years or so now. I remembe back in 1988 or 89 hearing noises coming from a guitar that I'd never heard before, one that many have gone on to emulate, a grooving funk style rhythm section and soulful vocals that round out a quartet that know how to make music. From there I was hooked.

Their 5th studio album 'The Chair in the Doorway' delivers exactly
what I love about this band, heavy riffs, weird guitars and awesome
vocals. I mean I'm only 3 songs in and this album sounds like nothing I've heard released in a number of years. So I guess you could call Living Colour unique and that's what the world needs more of. Diversity. How they aren't bigger really amazes me.

The album jumps around from heavy to funky to almost industrial. Yet the melody is never lost. Songs like 'The Chair' 'Decadance' and
'Young Man' couldn't be any more different yet all have the
distinctive flair that identify them as a Living Colour tracks. The
moody 'Method' is a stand out so far with it's almost Nine Inch Nails
style backing. Oh wait, hold the phone, what is this song?! 'Behind
The Sun' ok, this wins so far. I love this one. The underlying guitar
riff throughout the entire song is genius and catchier than Swine flu! It's my favourite track musically so far and will be hard to beat for favourite track overall.

Rhetorical question. Does a slide guitar belong on a Living Colour
record?! Hmm... Wow, nice change up they've just delivered on 'Bless Those (Little Annies Prayer)' a catchy little track. Not a huge fave but it has its moments. Ahhh a guitar solo. Song redeemed! Vernon Reid you are amazing. Can you please contact me and tell me how to do what you do?! Thanx. Corey Glover's vocals are so distinctive, as he belts out 'Hard Times' the power is still there. This cat can sing man.

As we round out the album, track 10 'Out of my mind' is heavy. Ooh
it's a good one. And we finish off with a track that I could've done
without, it's ok but fizzles out, it's called 'Not Tomorrow' but for
me it's 'Not today.' Ahhhh bonus tracks rule my life. Not only are
they unexpected but when they are awesome and as catchy as this one I'm happy! I don't know what it's called but they say 'Asshole' a lot so I'm calling it the awesome asshole song. Now THAT is a killer funky rockin track to close.

Living Colour have never really followed the verse, bridge, chorus
formula that most bands stick to but instead Living Colour have their own formula. One that makes them what they are and as I said before, unique. 'The Chair In The Doorway' is a great record, I can't wait to hear some of these songs live which is where they'll truly shine. Now if someone can move the chair out of the way, maybe, just maybe Living Colour can get through the doorway and out into the kudos they deserve.

The Wildhearts are back. Have they ever left? Depends on whom you ask. Have you even heard of The Wildhearts? Doesn’t matter, as that’s why you are on this site right? To hear about the BEST new music? Also known as the U.K.’s best-kept secret, The Wildhearts hit the airwaves and your brain waves with a tasty slice of their latest offering, Chutzpah!

I can’t stop listening to this album. You must listen to each track on iTunes or on their MySpace page. Call me biased but you have the best of everything here. The Wildhearts have a knack of taking the best poppy sounds of The Beatles and Cheap Trick and mixing them with some old school massive Metallica like riffs without stealing anything. I played them for a friend once and they said, “Man, they ripped off Green Day!” Ok, first off…uh, no. Secondly, The Wildhearts just kick Green Day’s ass. Simple as that. No offence to Green Day. They just get more airplay than The Wildhearts. Don’t get me started.

No filler, all thriller on Chutzpah! Let me tell ya. From the opening assault of “The Jackson Whites” to the final chords of the title track, three things will be evident:
1.	Your Monday morning commute will never be the same
2.	Your Friday night has a permanent soundtrack
3.	You will have one of the best albums of 2009 in your hands or downloaded into your iPod to tell all of your friends about

Remember the great feeling when you would get an album and the first track would just kick your ass? Well, “The Jackson Whites” does that here. It has a massive into riff and sing a long chorus that is classic Wildhearts all the way. “Plastic Jebus” follows with its hypnotic guitar and modern feel that hooks you in with a sweet melodic chorus. “The Only One” is the one track here that seems out of place and seems too eager to please, but that’s because Ginger isn’t on vocals, it’s bassist, Scott Sorry. Any die-hard Wildhearts fan may scoff, but it’s a catchy track that does grow on you so give it a chance. It’s more modern sounding, but kudos to The Wildhearts for trying to get new fans and become a household name. They f-ing deserve it. “John Of Violence” is definitely classic Wildhearts: heavy and melodic. “You Are Proof That Not All Women Are Insane” should be a hit single along with “You Took The Sunshine From New York.” If they aren’t hit singles, just add this atrocity to the list of crimes against humanity. “Tim Smith,” an ode to the Cardiacs lead singer, is like “John Of Violence,” but a little heavier and very melodic. It easily could have been one of those excellent Wildhearts b-sides the band generously gave fans back in the day.

The secret weapon on this album to me is “Low Energy Vortex.” It begins with a classic piano sound and just draws you in! It’s so melodic and cool. I bet you may just hit repeat on this bad boy. My pick for next single guys! “Mazel Tov Cocktail” would be a nice single as well as a friendly “whoa” throughout the song makes you just want to sing along at the bar or in your car. The punky pop metal sheen of “Chutzpah” just bitch slaps you and closes the album, but it leaves you wanting more. Find out for yourself. You’ll be glad you did!

You can also download a free bonus track, “The Snake, The Lion, The Monkey And The Spider” from their web site. God bless The Wildhearts.

Whoa!!!!

Ok. 10 seconds in to the new Winger album 'Karma' I'm in love. This one is HEAVY with a capital everything! No lie, I already prefer this album to their last and I'm only 2 minutes into the first song. In 'Deal With The Devil', Kip and band say they have traded their souls for Rock & Roll and I'd say they got a pretty good trade. Sucked in Devil, Winger won out on that one.

Tracks 2 and 3 in 'Stone Cold Killer' and 'Big World Away' keep the pace up and now I have a mild case of rock neck - the condition caused by too much head banging. Only 3 in, I'm worried for the safety of my neck.

See now, the only problem I have with the track 'Come A Little Closer' is that it's only 2:50mins in length. It's my favourite so far. Let's see if that changes. Ooh. Hello track 5, what's your name? 'Pull Me Under' well nice to hear you. Hmm... Seriously. The heavier riffs on this song are what has been missing from any Winger release for a long time. Ok now Reb Beach is just showing off. I'm sold. Back to the riffs. I want to say this album could be the love child of 'Pull' and 'In The Heart Of The Young' and they named it 'Karma”.

I am proud to say that I'm a Winger fan, have been for many years and I must say that on the last album, the skip button come into play, but 6 tracks in and no chance of that yet... Let's see how it plays out with 4 tracks to go.

Melodically this album is great!! Kip Winger has always had a great voice and on this album he has a range taking him from almost song talking to some of those high notes he's so good at. Winger have always been musically an amazing band and 'Karma' showcases so much of that talent. The production is big and at times raw and there is so much going on, yet none of it is lost. The little fills, the guitar squeals and of course the harmonies.

Hey, where's my power ballad? Always Within Me' has potential...Does it? Does it go there? Why YES yes it does!! Phew...

Seriously?! This is Winger right?! I still can't get over theheaviness. This riff on 'Feeding Frenzy' sounds Zombie or even Manson-esque. It's insane. I don't want it to end. Well that song did and um, now with 'After All This Time', it's a blues record. Hmm... Did I need that after being so pumped up? I don't think so. A good song, but weird placement on the album plus at over 6 minutes it's just too much for where it is, my first downer. Oh no. Now the last track is 7 minutes. But YAY! heavy is back. Thankyou 'Witness' you just may be the end to the album I need. Now I love a guitar solo. But do I love a 3 minute one that fades the album out?! Probably not. But do I enjoy Reb Beach's playing?! YES this cat can play. I've been playing guitar for 20 years and I'm not good enough to even carry his guitar case. It's a pleasure to listen to.

Overall it's a very Welcome comeback to Winger, at only 10 tracks I feel a couple more could have been added, but selfishly because I wanted more. And with only 1 skip worthy track that I'm sure will grow on me, I'll be busting out the Winger shirt tomorrow, so that's the tick of approval from me.

So they say Karma can be a bitch, well I say this Karma is BITCHIN'

The bitch is back! Well, err, the bitch better known as Lillian. Who the heck is Lillian you ask? It’s Lillian Axe, the underrated, melodic hard rock band that returns with a vengeance on their new release, Sad Day On Planet Earth. A VERY strong improvement over their last release, Waters Rising, that seemed to be missing something, but still decent all the same.

Lillian Axe made their mark on the 80’s hard rock scene in 1988 with their self-titled debut that was produced by the late Robbin Crosby of Ratt. The single, “Dream Of A Lifetime” garnered little airplay, but enough to fuel the rock and roll train for their second album, Love & War which featured the MTV hit, “Show A Little Love.” Unfortunately, for Lillian Axe, they were lost in the shuffle with every other 80’s hard rock outfit due to lack of promotion and label support. A real shame as their material strengthened with each album due to continuous touring, true musicianship and excellent songwriting.

Poetic Justice and Psychoschitzophrenia followed, which in my opinion, are the best two albums to begin your journey into what Lillian Axe are all about. Fortunately for you, both of these albums are available on iTunes. If you’re already a fan, enough said. Poetic Justice contained the hit, “True Believer” and Psychoschitzophrenia didn’t have any hits per se, but it definitely is the pre-cursor to Sad Day On Planet Earth. The self-titled release and Love & War are available in some circles and worth seeking out. They also have an import of b-sides called, Fields Of Yesterday and a live CD called, Live 2002 that is definitely worth a listen. Recorded live in Houston, TX, the disc contains some of their hard to find material well produced and delivered raw.

Filled with catchy hooks for days and thought provoking lyrics that draw you in, Sad Day On Planet Earth’s fifteen tracks take you on a musical journey through the eyes of founding member, lead guitarist, songwriter and producer, Steve Blaze. Rounding out the band are the awesomely underrated lead vocalist, Derrick LeFevre; rhythm guitarist, Sam Poitevent; bass guitarist; Eric Morris and Ken Koudelka on drums. LeFerve replaced former vocalist Ron Taylor some time ago, but it’s irrelevant as he holds his own on this epic new release.

An instrumental track called “Cocoon” slowly kicks things off until the awesome and rocking, “MegaSlowFade” begins. This is one of the best tracks on the album in the same vein as “Deepfreeze” from Psychoschitzophrenia. Many other heavy hitters include, “Jesus Wept,” “Ignite” and “The Grand Scale Of Finality” which is another excellent hard rock gem. Other standouts include “Hibernate,” “Down Below The Ocean” and “Divine.”

There are also poignant moments that compliment the album as well. The title track and “Blood Raining Down On Her Wings” feature tender melodies and emotion Lillian Axe are known for. “Within Your Reach,” “Cold Day In Hell” and “Nocturnal Symphony” contain a lot of heart and commercial feel that could be all over radio, or if I dare to call it mainstream radio. Melodic mainstream perhaps? You be the judge. “Kill Me Again” is an old b-side that received a makeover and the moody, “Fire, Blood, The Earth & Sea” finishes the album with a knockout punch.

You can’t say these guys are standard fare as you hear such a familiar formulaic pattern and approach in much of the music today. With all due respect to those bands that I won’t mention here, Lillian Axe deserves to be placed among the popular heavy hitters. They are truly different, unique and worth checking out if you are open-minded when it comes to your musical tastes. Sad Day On Planet Earth is an honest slice of integrity filled melodic hard rock worthy of your collection. Download it on iTunes or order a copy from their website or from their label, Blistering Records - links above!

A long, long time coming, and I have to admit being a fan of the first Lynch Mob record like I was, I had my doubts that they would be able to follow it up with anything approaching the sexy, bluesy and ballsy “Wicked Sensation”. After living with the album in my car stereo for a couple weeks I can honestly say I’m blown away. I hear a lot of supposed “comeback albums” that either are so far from what made the band special in the first place, or it’s so close that you have the sense they faked it just to recreate a classic sound. “Smoke and Mirrors” is neither of these things and would find a place in my collection even if I had never heard any of Lynch Mob’s previous efforts.

The leadoff track, “21st Century Man” brings back all the savage groove found on “Wicked”, but with the added ingredients of some additional maturity in the lyric department as well as a tighter, more focused guitar sound. As you listen through the album, you hear exactly what you hope to hear from a Lynch Mob record in the sleazy grooves of “My Kind of Healer”, “Let the Music Be Your Master”, and “Madly Backwards”. But you also hear some serious, no pulling punches riffing like in “Time Keepers” and “We Will Remain”.

“But wait” you say, “I like ballads, what about that?” well have no fear, George and Oni show without a doubt that Don Dokken is not the only one who can write an emotional piece of music with “Before I Close My Eyes” (one of my favorite tracks), and “Lucky Man”. There are a couple that don’t exactly sound like they fit the mold, and are perhaps a bit more experimental (don’t worry, not in a “Smoke This” kind of way!), like “The Phacist” and the bonus track “Mansions in the Sky”, but these are not bad songs, just different and I’ve come to like them as well. Another favorite of mine is the smoky blues of the reproachful “Where Do You Sleep at Night”.

In short this is no one dimensional album, and should please fans of not just Lynch Mob and/or George Lynch in general, but just good, bluesy hard rock with great musicians playing it. I for one will be making it a point to see them on this tour, hope to see you there!

Still centered around founding members Chris and Tino Troy, new vocalist Mike Freeland is introduced into the mix on this album.

To sum it up, "Sanctuary" straddles the boundaries of melodic metal with a distinct European flavour, whilst containing elements of a classic British twin guitar assault, a heavy dose of AOR melodies and of course the trademarks of Praying Mantis. Produced by Andy Reilly (Asia, The Cult, Bruce Dickinson, FM) the album captures the essence of what Praying Mantis has always been about whilst putting a fresh modern and at times progressive spin on the bands sound.

Opening song "In Time" begins with a soaring vocal which transcends into a power metal guitar riff, but don't let that fool you as the chorus is gloriously melodic. A perfect sampler of what is to come with the rest of the album, the song ends with some killer instrumental guitar work that harks back to Whitesnake’s, Slip Of The Tongue, Steve Vai era.

“Restless Heart” and “Highway” are the albums most melodic and accessible sounding tracks that are sure to appeal to those that revel in hook infested melodic AOR glory.

Musically, the album borders on sheer brilliance. Blistering, yet at times delicate lead guitar work, British metal riffage, a driving rhythm section, songs drenched in keyboards and some complex musical arrangements.

New vocalist Mike Freeland has slotted in incredibly well and whilst bringing a differen’t vocal sound to the band compared to those of the past, for the songs on this album one couldn't wish for anything more than what Freeland delivers! Equally adept at hitting the high notes rising above blistering guitars such as on “So High” as he is on more restrained songs such as surely the albums centre piece, the majestic and grandiose “Turn The Tide”.

With a CD cover depicting a decaying Statue Of Liberty, it would come as no surprise that the album does indeed head into some dark and powerful lyrical and musical destinations such as “Touch The Rainbow”, “Threshold Of A Dream” and “Playing God”. All songs which will certainly appeal to those Mantis fans harking back to the days of the NWOBHM movement or those that worship the classic rock sound made famous by the likes of classic era Rainbow. Whilst closing track “Sanctuary” ends on a more progressive note.

This album has been one of the most unexpected finds of the year so far. For those willing to give this album the amount of listening and attention it deserves, you too will be rewarded with one of the most intricate and highest quality melodic metal releases for the year.

*Reviewed by: Scotty Rock

Hands up who knows the 7 deadly sins? You know, gluttony, sloth,
wrath, lust, greed, envy, and um, what is it? Can I call a friend?
'Hi Stryper, its Troy, just need some help with which of the 7 deadly
sins am I missing?' Oh, yes of course, thanks Stryper for helping me
to remember PRIDE.

Stryper’s new album 'Murder by Pride' is in a nutshell, really good. I
don't think I've heard Michael Sweet’s voice sounding better actually,
and I must say, it's always a pleasure to hear it.

The guitars are chunky and the rhythm section as full as a pool on a
hot summers day. This signature Stryper sound is all over this record
and that is all I need. Lyrically it is what it is, a Stryper record.
In '4 Leaf Clover' we hear Sweet belt out 'there's no strength in a
unicorn, no luck in a 4 Leaf Clover' ok kinda cheesy but you wouldn't
know it once you're tapping along to it and doing some air guitar to
the monster riff!!

3 songs in we hit a big ballad, namely 'Alive' something Stryper have
been well known for in the past. Let me just take this one in for a
second. Yep, as I type with one hand while the other holds a lighter
aloft swaying left to right, that means they've done it right. Ok,
it's done, my hand is a little burnt but oh so worth it.

The production on 'Murder by Pride' is awesome. Especially on that of
the title track. It's anthemic, head banging, fist pumping goodness!!
Plus, a harmony guitar solo just rules. It is easily the best track on
the album. I could turn it off now and be happy, but I won't as how
will I know what treats Stryper have remaining for me?!

Well let me fill you in. More rock, more big ballads and a song that
musically sounds like an Alterbridge / Creed hybrid in 'I Believe'
what a great song and great message. Vintage Stryper.

As we round out the album, normally my immense dislike of the ballad
ending would be quite prominent right now. But as Michael belts out an
extremely moving song 'My love, my life, my flame' a tribute to his
wife who passed away earlier this year, I stray from my norm and
actually consider this one of my favourites of the album and a
beautiful way to close it.

In the end, it's a shame that Stryper don't get the kudos they
deserve, then again, they may not be changing the world with what
they're doing but if it touches you then they've done their job.

In Stryper we trust.

*Reviewed by: Troy Milfton

How often can you say that a band's second release is better than their first?! Well? How often?! Oh sorry, I couldn't hear you. Well the answer is not very often. The new Daughtry album 'Leave this town' is one that really surprised and for me is in fact better than their debut multi platinum release. Care to know why?! Read on...

The almost Linkin Park style riff kicking of 'you don't belong' sets up what 'leave this town' is, a big, loud modern style rock album and if I wasn't typing right now I'd applaud Daughtry for this as it's about time an album this good was released by anyone.

The lead single 'no surprise' I have been aware of for a long time when it was a demo by former Click 5 singer Eric Dill and I had always said that if released it would be a huge hit. Recruiting Nickelback's Chad Kroeger to help with a rewrite of part of the song, the band have recorded one of the best songs of the year and I can be happy knowing that that demo I loved so much got it's day. I mean really, such a catchy song, and when you hit a groove like that of 2 minutes 19 seconds into the song it's no surprise it's a hit. See what I did there?!

The album continues to surprise and I think this is partly due to the band. It's the first time that all band members have recorded together and you can tell that the combination works. Who'd have thought that an American Idol contestant could make such good music?! ME, that's who. So all those haters of the Idol franchise should really wake up as if it wasn't for that show and Chris Daughtrys appearance, we may never have been able to hear these songs on 'Leave this town.'

My personal favourite on the album is 'what I meant to say' a song that will easily become a single, Chris, if you're reading this, this track needs to be a single mate, it is killer. A big rocker and ooh a guitar solo. How I miss those. If your foot isn't tapping along when you hear this track I'd say you're either deaf or just weird. You decide.

Of course an album isn't complete with a slower track or 4. One of the best being 'September' even though it's August but I'll forgive them for that, the song is very personal, moving and a beautiful track indeed. Well done boys.

'Ghost of me' = 3rd single in my opinion. That's all I'm saying about that one.

The album rounds out with some more rockers 'Supernatural' is very very well produced, some new sounds and a different feel in the verses makes this a strong track at the back end of an album where normally artists can fade out with a few fillers.

Vince Gill?! No I'm not just randomly saying the name of a country singer. He makes an appearance on 'Tennessee Line' which is an odd choice for a guest vocalist, but one that I like, and makes this acoustic driven number an interesting choice on an album of rock.

If I had only 1 complaint about the last track is that it took 2 minutes and 36 seconds for me not to worry about an acoustic slow song finish. One of my biggest fears!! But nicely done and the album is complete...

Wow is all I can say here. 'Leave this town' is truly a great album and one that will again see Daughtry get the kudos they deserve for this release.

Here's to many more albums from one of the best bands out there at the moment.

Touchdown.

*Reviewed by: Troy Milfton

Love them, hate them or not even know who they are, Danger Danger truly are a band that really should be taken notice of. With this newest release 'Revolve' due September 18, D2 have reinvented themselves with an album so full of hooks that you'd need 5 pairs of pliers to pull them all out!

'Revolve' sees the return of Ted Poley on vocals and he has never sounded better. Seriously, his vocal talent is second to none and always will be, the man has a gift that I'd happily get for Christmas or a birthday. The long time songwriting duo of drummer Steve West and bass guitarist Bruno Ravel have sat down and written 11 songs that kick your ass three times over before they're even finished. Plus the addition of Rob Marcello, the one time fan now guitar genius in Danger Danger shreds better than anyone I've heard on an album in years.

Let me break down a few of the tracks on Revolve:

'That's What I'm Talking About' sums 'Revolve' up. 30 seconds into this song, I knew what they were talking about, it'd been a long time coming but they were back and I already loved this song and album. It's a great opener, big chorus, bigger guitars and perfect harmonies and it just doesn't stop there.

'Killin Love' sounds like it could be on a HIM record, it's a more
industrial sound yet pure rock, but it's 'Hearts On The Highway' where the album was signed, sealed and delivered for me, what a track!! A) it just starts so I’m already sold and 2) it has a chorus that's so catchy that I needed to go and get a shot! In fact I'm putting it on right now and I'll be back.

Ok, back, and you want anthems?! You got em, 'Keep On Keepin On' is the more upbeat fun Danger Danger of old and has that great message of never give up in a time when people may be looking for those words of wisdom, then there's 'FU$' which is Danger Danger as they are known, lyrically funny yet clever. Seriously how do you get a Donald Trump mention in a song?! Yep, they did it and it's classic. Plus it has 'whoa ohs' in it. These songs are the killers!! 2 of the best I have heard and 2 I'm taking on as unoffical anthems and upon hearing them I'd say you just might too...

Of course what kind of rock album would be complete without a big power ballad?! The answer is a bad one! So Danger Danger give us a couple in 'Fugitive' and 'Never Give Up' and I'm content.

A couple of songs I feel don't quite hit the amazing mark of the majority of the album yet they're still awesome and fit in the mix of these well written, well performed and magically produced songs.

What I’m trying to say is that the 4 guys in the band gel musically. It works, It rocks and I’m not scared to say it’s my album of the year so far, if not the last 2 or 3 years. It truly could be a follow up to their debut album in 1989 and that isn’t a bad thing at all. Trust me!

Like I said at the start, if you don't know who Danger Danger are, you really should check them out. I can't even rate this one as the number would be higher than what it was out of.

Thankyou for this one D2, rock never went away but they're making sure it stays around for good.

Bang Bang... What's that sound?! Find out September 18... Danger Danger are BACK BACK!!

*Reviewed by: Troy Milfton

In a month that heralded the official press release concerning the new Danger Danger album “Revolve”, frontman Ted Poley also released his awesome double CD “Greatestits”. Featuring 33 songs, it covers all bases from Ted’s work outside of Danger Danger. Original song demos, hard to find rare tracks including the impossible to find Xmas Song, the Japan exclusive Takoyaki Rock, and new stuff that will feature on his forthcoming solo CD, slated for release sometime in 2010....it has it all!

CD 1 kicks off with a selection of tracks from Ted’s recent solo releases “Collateral Damage” and “Smile”. Both albums are chock full of the killer melodic rock that Ted is renowned for and feature some of my personal favorite Poley songs in “What If She Knew” and ”Maybe”, whilst the track “Smile” is featured on CD2 in demo form.

In late 1993 after leaving Danger Danger, Ted formed “Bone Machine”, with the band releasing the now much sought after albums “Dogs” and “Disappearing Inc”. Quite scarily, the CD cover of “Disappearing Inc” portrays a premonition of Ted’s, which was of the destruction of the World Trade Centre in New York. With songs like “Missing You” and “Anisha”, Bone Machine certainly proved that Ted at the time was still at the top of the game despite leaving Danger Danger. This era features quite heavily on CD 1 and for some, it may finally be an opportunity to get these songs on CD!

Marking the beginning of an association with Austrian native guitarist, Gerard Pilcher, in 2000 Ted resurfaced again with “Melodica”. And melodic indeed “Melodica” was! How good is the song “Love Metal”. With 3 albums and numerous live appearances, “Melodica” morphed into “Poley/Pilcher” with the album “Big” being released, continuing on in the same melodic vein.

Proving just how prolific Ted has been in the past decade, in late 2008, with former Adriangale guitarist Vic Rivera, Ted slammed us all with the Poley/Rivera album “Only Human”. Represented on “Greatestits” with the title track, the album is definitely worth grabbing a hold of if you can find it! But fear not, a 2nd Poley/Rivera album is currently in the works.

For most hardcore Ted Poley fans who would no doubt be familiar with all the above, “Greatestits” really proves a valuable collectors item with the inclusion of a number of incredibly rare and unheard tracks. Recordings with JK Northrup, a track dating back to Ted’s days in “Prophet” as well as a couple of tracks from Ted’s contribution to the Pleasuredome project.

Collaborating with the hottest songwriters going around at the moment, James and Tom Martin, “You Won’t See Me Cryin” and “Tokyo Nites” hint at what is to come in the form of a new Ted Poley solo CD.

The inclusion of “Ted Poley” a parody of Kiss’s “Unholy” featuring CC Banana on vocals, sure ends the collection on a comical note, along with the much sought after XMAS song from 1994 “A Letter To Santa”.

A MUST have for any Ted Poley fan, “Greatestits” sure is an unexpected and welcome release from one of the most legendary men in melodic rock. If you get in quick, you might be able to snare your copy with the limited edition cover featuring twin towers of a differen’t kind (as seen above)!

Order your copy by clicking right here...........

*Reviewed by: Scotty Rock

Formed in 1987, the fact that the band didn’t manage to crack the big time during their five year existence is all the more bemusing when one hears the quality of this release. They played all the right places, were featured in all the right pages and had legendary photographer Neil Zlozower to portray their pretty faces, but for whatever reason....it just didn’t happen.

Produced by Erik Turner of Warrant fame and Tommy Thayer of Kiss and Black & Blue fame, as well as songs written by both, the band’s association with Warrant does not end there. Shake City vocalist Adam Shore, was vocalist for Warrant before being replaced by the more charismatic Jani Lane. But wait, there’s more as far as the Warrant connection goes.....Track 11 on this album is the Jani Lane penned “Game Of War” which features on a few Warrant releases as an unreleased/bonus track.

Featuring 12 tracks of killer fist pumping hook laden hard rock anthems, “Shake City” is one hell of a hard rock album! “Lust & Love”, “Betty Blue”, “One Good Reason” and the previously mentioned “Game Of War” is a far superior brand of high octane rock to that which was churned out by bands that must of found their record deal on the back of a cereal pack!!!

Lead vocalist Adam Shore possesses an almost perfect voice for this kind of hard rock and certainly matches his Warrant successor Jani Lane in the vocal department. The influence of Turner and Thayer on production is not lost, with elements of Warrant and Black N Blue scattered throughout.

Of course no release of this kind would be complete without a few power ballads in the acoustic driven “Little Lianne” and the Shore and Erik Turner co-written “Can’t Get Over You”.

“Get It While It’s Hot” hints at a bluesy side to the band, “Sweet Dreams” is a sublime pop number with some Cheap Trick’esque stylings and vocal harmonies, whilst “Psychedelic Ride” is indeed just that, with the band channelling Enuff Z Nuff on this track.

If you are looking for some of the best hard rock straight from the Sunset Strip that you have never heard, then look no further than this release from Shake City. Let’s see if Eonian Records can top this one....the challenge has been laid down!

*Reviewed by: Scotty Rock

One of the most rewarding aspects of doing what we do here at May The Rock Be With You is discovering a new favorite band that you otherwise may never have heard of. Especially from a country such as Germany for instance, where Torpedohead are from. (If you want to find out more about Torpedohead, you can read our “Best Thing You’ve Never Heard” feature by clicking “right here”).

On this, their debut album, the trio of Torpedohead deliver a mighty fine collection of gritty rock n roll that is a melting pot of 80‘s inspired hard rock such as LA Guns and early era Faster Pussycat, through to the 70’s inspired rock of Michael Monroe and the Electric Angels, throw in a healthy dose of punk attitude ala the New York Dolls and add in some Rolling Stones for good measure. This certainly gives you a pretty good idea of what you can expect from “Lovesick Avenue”.

With a high emphasis on songs chock full of tasty lead guitar work, razor sharp riffs and killer melodies and hooks, the album is strong from start to finish. Kicking off with a pulsating bassline, “Wall Of Love” is one of the harder rocking tracks on the album and right up front let’s you know what you are in for with “Torpedohead”. “Brand New Sinsation” and “Abuse Myself” follow in the same manner, whilst lead vocalist Sven Spacebrain’s whisky soaked raspiness is perfectly suited to the music and lyrics that the band deliver.

When it comes to the use of guitars in the album, we take our hat off to chief songwriter and guitarist Sven for the instantly memorable chord progressions and guitar solo’s, some of which are as memorable as the chorus’s and melodies themselves! How often do we usually press “skip” when it comes to an instrumental intro/prelude track on albums...well I quite often do, as some are just plain irrelevant. But in the case of “Grange Road” the 1.49 minute acoustic/slide guitar track, it’s the perfect intro to the country inspired “Ticket To The Moon” which is one of my favorite tracks, just love the lead guitar throughout this song.

The moody “The Devil Inside Her Eyes” and the harmonica laced epicness of “Heaven” illustrate the band are equally as adept at slowing things down as they are on full tilt rock numbers such as the anthemic “Six Years Dead” which is the albums heaviest song. First single “Broken Flowers”, along with “Love Rocket and the tongue in cheekness of “Spacequeen” offer some more catchy rock numbers. With their own interpretation of Elvis’s “Burning Love”, the album closes in rocking style.

For those that love honest classic rock n roll with a harder edge, where the emphasis is on catchy songs, then you too should find “Lovesick Avenue” a highly charming and enjoyable CD that will drag you in deeper and deeper the more you listen.

*Reviewed by: Scotty Rock

Knyght who despite their still young age, have been rocking for about 7 years now and feature brothers Tommy and Olly.
On this their second EP, Knyght based themselves in Munich to record the EP with experienced German producer Heiko Hinze and the overall production of the EP signifies that this was a move that certainly paid off.

On this 5 track EP, Knyght show enough potential to demand that they be added to your “bands to watch” list over the next few years. Mixing a variety of 80’s hard rock influences, the end result is something unique. Catchy guitar riffs, driving piano, some big chorus’s, lot’s of cool melodies, interesting tempo changes, a little bit of funk and excellent musicianship make this EP an enjoyable listen.

Opening track “Goin Anywhere” is a fun anthemic rocker and love the 80’s pop styled guitar solo! “Heaven Or Hell” slows things down a little bit, but some tempo changes in the verses and some crunchy guitars lifts the song out of “power ballad” territory. Speaking of power ballads, “A Million Times” is the bands attempt at a big 80’s rock ballad and features all the key ingredients one would expect. “The Game Of Love & Hate” rocks things up a bit and the funky guitars and cool piano riff lead the song into a great 80’s inspired hard rock number. On closing track “Shut Up”don’t let the classically inspired keyboard intro fool you.....this song ROCKS! Drawing on elements of some more modern rock as well classic rock (check the Deep Purple inspired musical interlude) and featuring some growling vocals, the track shows the bands definite potential and closes the EP in fine style.

With continued opportunities playing and learning from some of hard rock’s more experienced campaigners as they have already done, such as Faster Pussycat and Bang Tango, “Knyght” will certainly mature into a great rock band. The guys already seem to have the rockstar image and a confident swagger down pat and with time spent honing their musical identity and further developing their songwriting abilities, I certainly look forward to what the band comes up with next.

You can read more about the band in our “Best Things You’ve Never Heard” section by clicking HERE!!!

*Reviewed by: Scotty Rock

It's been a long wait for the long time fans of Crown Of Thorns. 6 years to be exact. While the band has been concentrating on other projects, the fans have been crying out, anticipating a return from the rock gods. Finally the news hit late last year that Crown Of Thorns had signed a deal with European label Frontiers Records for a new album, and all the fans worldwide started rejoicing.

This band should be a household name in the rock circuits, and it's a disgrace that they aren't as big as they deserve to be. Fronted by ex Plasmatics and KISS co-writer Jean Beauvoir, this is the bands 6th studio album and delivers a fine slice of AOR/melodic hard rock with a few modern influences.

The band which features Jean on vocals and guitar, Tommy Lafferty (lead guitar), Michael Paige (bass) and Hawk Lopez (drums), brings forth a new horizon of melodic rock bliss with their new album FAITH.
FAITH delivers everything a true Crown Of Thorns fan craves. Melodies to die for, along with the feeling and attitude of a true rock band. Killer riff rockers followed by heartfelt ballads, FAITH has it all. Any fan of their previous work will find something here to enjoy. FAITH takes the listener on a journey from the aggressiveness of 'Rock Ready' to the heart string burner of 'All Or Nothing'.

One thing you can always be guaranteed with a Crown Of Thorns release is that the production is going to be top notch and the performances of the band members are going to be of a high quality, and FAITH delivers those in bucket loads.

This is a high class sounding album, with all the instruments and instrumentation given the right mix and feel for the songs. Some great performances by the band members with Jean's vocals sounding killer whether on the rockers 'Faith' and 'Rock Ready' to the crooning of 'All I Wanna Do'. Tommy delivers some fine solo work and really should be given more credit. A fine guitarist with just the right feel for the song in question. Michael and Hawk bring together a rhythm section that can't be faulted. There are some great bass lines throughout this cd, and along with some of Hawks fills, they certainly bring a cohesion to the band. A tight knit unit indeed.

When i hear this album i think of KARMA mixed with LOST CATHEDRAL, a spice of DESTINY UNKNOWN and a pinch of Jean's solo CHAMELEON cd. Each song represent something familiar sounding without being repeated. A touch of this and a touch of that. The band has certainly delivered here with an album that rocks, croons and mellows to its hearts content.

Now to the songs:
FAITH
The opening rocker has all the trademarks of a Crown Of Thorns classic. A haunting keyboard intro kicks into the furious riffs of the opening chords. Great rocking verses lead into a more mellow bridge and chorus before hitting the listener between the eyes with that killer verse riff again. Jean's vocals go from aggressive to mellow in the matter of moments. The keyboards throughout this song are just right in the mix, and although the chorus is a little simple it certainly makes a statement. This song could've easily come off KARMA, but the more aggressive guitars is a big plus for this song and the sounding of the album in general.
Awesome add-libbing by Jean through the bridge before the song kicks back in with a HUGE thumping bass line that would have the fists pumping in the air. They have a sure bonafide LIVE classic on their hands here.

ALL IN MY HEAD
A mid-tempo rocker that starts with a cool guitar riff before kicking into Jean's vocals. Jean delivers a laid back vocal along the melody line, before it kicks into a chorus that once again has that simplistic feel in what is a very different sound for Crown Of Thorns. Without having a major impact it certainly fits the feel of the feel good track. Jean delivers another classic vocal and although this song may not be as instant as the opener, after repeated listens the chorus is definately a grower. Has part of a LOST CATHEDRAL feel, and includes an awesome guitar solo by Tommy. I love how after the solo it kicks back to the riff and a thumping bass line, before structuring back to the chorus.
This song really has a definate feel about it, and feels like a new form of song for Crown Of Thorns. A cool keyboard outro finishes the song.

LIVING IN THE SHADOWS
Hmmm...this one really took me by surprise to start with. A haunting orchestration filled with acoustic guitar leads to an almost movie soundtrack feel. Jean's vocals come in, in a heartfelt manner. Almost delivering it like a painful memory. The feel of this song is incredible, grasping the listener and taking them on a journey through heartache and pain. A great bridge takes us through to the chorus that once again is simple but effective. Some cool backgrounds support Jean's vocals throughout the 2nd verse.
Now this is where it gets interesting, going from a heartfelt ballad into a LOST CATHEDRAL type rocker for the add-bridge, before heading back into the heartfelt bridge with its haunting manner, going back into the chorus. This song has so much pain through its delievery its almost saturating for the listener, but in a good way.
The song kicks back once again to the rocker stage during the solo before the chorus kicks in with the rocker structure. This is definately not your typical Crown Of Thorns song. More diversity than a Cher hairdo, the track finishes with those awesome trademark add-libs by Jean. Clocking in at over 6 minutes, this song maybe could've been trimmed a fraction, but there is certainly something here for any Thorns fan to consume.

THE ONE
A cool bass riff starts this AOR track that is sure to please fans of Jean's solo work. A nice laidback vocal delivery in the verses hits into a chorus that is feel good and passionate. Jean has so much feel in his vocals that it makes you, the listener, feel for him in the sense of what the lyrics are saying. The ususal double layered vocal bridge includes a wonderful solo by Tommy, before going back into the chorus. The bassline is PURE AOR!!! What is not to love about this song. A classic Jean Beauvoir track. Simple but effective. Finishes with another solo continuing until the fadeout.
AOR has never been so prominant in a Crown Of Thorns release than this track. Jean's vocals are high class, and this track wouldn't have been out of place on his CHAMELEON cd. Wonderfully smooth in its structure and performance. Should be a winner for the fans that like the more laid back sound of the band.

ROCK READY
WOW!! didnt see this coming. One of the heaviest songs in the Crown Of Thorns catalogue. Probably the closest thing to DESTINY UNKNOWN on this album with an old school classic sound. Can these guitars be any heavier? haha!! I LOVE IT!! Another simple chorus but filled with so much power. Great lyrics and vocals by Jean. Man i cant get this riff out of my head....what is happening here. AWESOME drumming by Hawk coming out of the solo, and Tommy SLAYS this baby to pieces. This is IN YOUR FACE Crown Of Thorns like no other, and fits the album perfectly. Would've been nice to maybe have another track like this on the cd.
The verses has a real 'Dokken Dysfunctional' feel to it before hitting a cool bridge to takes the listener into an old- school- fits- pumping- slow grind chorus that stays with you. I LOVE the feel of this song. Moody, grinding, and powerful.

BELIEVE ME
Believe Me is backed by a sounding verse in the vein of Jean's CHAMELEON cd. Another feel good track with a cool vocal by Jean. Containing layers of instrumentation the song takes the listener on a journey of a feel good, swaying 'arms in the air' crooner.
Jean has so much feel and passion in his vocals its not too hard to feel the pain in his delivery. A lighter in the air chorus takes the song to another level. This is AOR at its finest, and is sure to please those fans of the more mellow side of the band. Musicianship and production is top notch in this song, but to be honest it sounds more like a Jean Beauvoir solo track than a Crown Of Thorns track. That said, the band still delivers a fine piece of AOR balladry here.

NOBODY
Another classic hard rock guitar riff in a similar vein to 'Alone Again'. A more uptempo delivery in the verses with another fine vocal from Jean. Boy does these verses have ATTITUDE and fits Jeans vocals perfectly. Foot stomping and classic musicianship with a thumping bass line once again. Personally the chorus doesnt do alot for me...just doesnt seem to take the song to a higher level, instead being consistant in the feel. A very cool add bridge with some fine Hawk fills and keyboard backing.
I feel this song could've really gone to the next level if the chorus wasnt as 'safe' as it was. That being said, this song while in the same style of 'Alone Again' certainly outscores that song with a fine aggressive vocal and attitude.

STAY WITH ME
Another mid uptempo rocker with a cool intro blending melody and feel before hitting into Jeans vocals with a killer verse. The orchestration is all over the bridge giving this song good depth and appeal. The chorus is feel good but has strong backing vocals in that classic Crown Of Thorns style. The production on this song is great, and the mix perfect, with its rich blend of guitars and keyboards. This song is definately a grower and could've easily been on KARMA.
After the second chorus the song cuts back a bit with its keyboard and bass line running the melody. This sounds FANTASTIC, before kicking on into Tommy's solo screaming over the layers of keyboards....WOW!!! After multiple listens you certainly get the feel of this track and the many layers that make it up.

ALL I WANNA DO
This is another song that reminds me of Jean's CHAMELEON cd. The verses with the stop start drum patterns add to the flavour of this track. A laid back Jean vocal kicks into a chorus that couldve easily come off LOST CATHEDRAL or KARMA. Has that 'End Of The Road' feel to it, but is definately a big sing a long chorus that keeps getting better and better with each listen...it just comes out of nowhere.
Some more layered vocals through the second verse takes us back into this killer AOR chorus with its awesome backings giving it feel and depth. A simplistic solo that builds through the refrain and follows the melody with the keyboard backing, sounds incredible. The chorus hits again and takes the song out with multiple choruses.

HOME AGAIN
The Thorns are rocking again with a cool HEAVY riff kicking the song off to the verses where Jean is down and dirty in delivery and feel. With its cool running bass line, this song really has got attitude. Before you know it the song kicks into a BIG melodic rock chorus, in the same vein as 'Although We're Fools'.
The verses kick back with that heavy 'in your face' riffing....gotta love those heavy guitars. The chorus is back with Jean delivering another fine performance. God i love that bass line, just right in the mix. The song delivers an add bridge thats in the KILLER range with the bass line continuing to impress.
A very cool solo running with the bassline doesnt last long enough for me before we are hit with that killer riff for a few bars before going into that BIG chorus again, filled with backing vocals that any hard rock fan would die for. A definate favourite and sure to please any hardcore fan of the band. Layers and layers of backings. Cant beat it. Song of the album for me.

ALL OR NOTHING
Jean delivers another ballad in the mould of 'I'm Sorry' off KARMA, and man is this a great track. An absolute monster AOR chorus engulfed in a verse that delivers pain and emotion like Jean has certainly nailed throughout the album. Great lyrics through the verses, delivered with the grace they deserve. Jean is certainly a genius of this genre. Just the right orchestration without overpowering the song, so that the vocal and lyrics can deliver the right message. Musically one of the bands best ballads. The structure is perfect and love the little guitar libs throughout the later verses, builds the song nicely without becoming bombastic.
Another cool add bridge with solo leading into the chorus, that takes us out of this magnificent journey that is FAITH.

So there we have it. The band has certainly kept the FAITH. The band needs to take a bow because not only have they delivered a fine slice of AOR/melodic rock, they have kept true to themselves and have included many facets of the band to no doubt please their legion of fans. Crown Of Thorns know what the fans want. They know the style of music they want to hear, and it certainly helps when the band themselves are fans of this genre. Their rock roots certainly shine through and while some bands go with the flow of trends, Crown Of Thorns stick to the tried and true and in keeping true to themselves they certainly havent alienated any of their fans with this release. My only little gripe would be that there could've been a little more guitar in the choruses to 'Faith' and 'Home Again' after both having killer riffs in the verses.

After 6 years in the waiting, FAITH has arrived. I give this album a rating of 93%

*Reviewed by: Darren @ Crown Of Thorns OZ Army

Not only was he the first interview that we ever got for this website but he was also a main contender on the reality TV show ‘Rockstar Supernova’ it was there that we first got to hear the song ‘Throw it away’ and in the 2 years we waited for Juke Kartels debut album, that song was still stuck in my head. What I love is that Juke Kartel have kept this song and it truly is a stand out on their debut album ‘Nowhere Left to Hide.’

The album kicks off with the riff laden ‘Save Me’ and is that just the case? Is Juke Kartel here to save music? With this album, I can say yeah, I think this is a very good start! The song itself has a great hook and big chorus and is the perfect choice for the opener. ‘Throw it away’ is track 2 as mentioned above you’ll be walking around singing ‘Whoa oh oh oh oh oh’ forever.

Track 3 is where the album really takes off. ‘December’ is by far the best track on the album, a very catchy chorus and just a groove that warranted the single release. It is a shame that this won’t get the play it deserves as it truly is better than anything topping the charts at the moment.

As the album progresses what I found was they have structured it so well that there is a killer track every few songs. Songs like ‘My Baby’ coming in with a big chorus and a rockier groove, ‘The Closer we get’ with its very Matchbox 20 feel and the big ballad ‘Then she said’ give the album tracks that are memorable. Others tracks are a little same same, don’t get me wrong they’re still great songs, but lack the punch of the 6 stand outs of these 12 songs on ‘Nowhere Left to Hide.’

Overall in my opinion this is a great album, its just not an amazing album, I can imagine these new tracks would shine hearing them live and when Juke Kartel hit your town, mine included, make sure you drop by and see a band with a lot of potential and I really look forward to the future with this great Australian band. Maybe they will eventually save us…I give ‘Nowhere Left To Hide’ 22 out of 26

*Reviewed by: Troy Milfton*
