Review
Melbourne three piece Celadore on their EP ‘Distance Is A Gun’ display a maturity and sense of musicianship that on face value certainly belies their age. The video for title track ‘Distance Is A Gun’ has been receiving airplay on Video Hits and the opening guitar riff will no doubt bring back a flood of memories for fans of Motor Ace. The song has bundles of melody, light and shade and an undeniable energy. ‘Make Sure‘ is an equally catchy little number that has a very distinct Australian pop sound. The lush and majestic opening verse of ‘Eliza’ deceptively lures the listener, before it’s crashing chorus and addictive “yeah yeah and whoa’s”. The rawness and rambunctious rock of ‘You Say I Say Too Much’ almost has an early Foo Fighters vibe, but just like the Foo Fighters at their most rocking moments, melody is always high on the agenda. Closing track ‘Control’ with it’s uplifting vibe is a song that screams out “SINGLE” and whets the appetite for more from this highly talented band.
Official Press Release
With an honest love for melodic pop-rock, Celadore’s approach to their debut EP Distance Is A Gun was all about the songs.
“Our songs are drawn from personal experience. ‘Distance Is A Gun’ is the title track and strangely enough was the last song that we worked on prior to recording. We had already started pre-production when Coops brought in a rough demo. With its catchy pulse and crashing chorus, it was the way the relatively bleak and defeated lyrics sat with the upbeat energy of the melody that stood out.” - Celadore
Playing together since their early teens, guitarist/vocalist Michael Cooper and bassist Tom Ahmed would steal away from class to jam in their high school rehearsal room, but the three piece wasn’t complete until they welcomed drummer David Noordhoff in 2009. With the full line up realised, they set off to record their debut in the secluded sanctuary of a coastal beach shack in East Victoria.
Taking inspiration from their idols Crowded House, Motor Ace, Elliott Smith, Big Heavy Stuff and The Beatles, Celadore’s sound swings between brooding rock, subdued balladry and uplifting pop. It was this care for delicate melodies and driving hooks that grabbed the attention of UK producer Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters - Colour And The Shape, Kisschasy - Hymns For The Non-Believer, Gyroscope - Cohesion). Responding to a couple of rough mixes sent over to his East London studios, Chris was quick to take up the job of mixing ‘Distance Is A Gun.’
“I liked what I heard immediately. For me, it’s all about melody, and Celadore have it in spades.” - Chris Sheldon
Greater than the sum of its parts, Celadore make big noise for a little band. Their new single and title track from the Distance Is A Gun EP is yet another confident offering, following the late 2009 release of their “Make Sure” single.
