“We are DIAMOND EYE!! we hail from the Westcoast of Australia. Culminating from many previous bands and a wealth of experience we are here to show people that rock is still as badass as it ever was!! With powerful songs, big choruses and huge guitars, Diamond Eye is putting melody and flash back into heavy rock and we want to share it with u,”
To kick us off, tell us how and when the band came together and what's the inspiration behind the name Diamond Eye?
Diamond Eye was formed in July 2006 after Will and Greg returned from ventures on the East Coast of Australia. The name Diamond Eye was settled on after many drinking sessions trying to come up with a cool name! The name itself we feel is strong words but do not represent anything in particular as we want people to interpret it as they will.
Can you introduce each member of your band and give us a little known fact about each of them, preferably as rock 'n' roll as possible!!
Will Kelly – Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar: Once conned his way into a drinking session with INXS under an assumed name.
Greg Fawcett – Lead Guitar/Vocals: Sprained his ankle after falling off a table doing a guitar solo when drunk…
Chase Cameron – Bass: Has a Rock n Roll Cemetery tattooed on his chest.
Troy (Bags) Goscombe – Drums: Likes to practice his with his pet snake “Stimpy” around his neck.
How would you describe your sound to a deaf person?
Like getting slapped in the face with a big wet fish!!
You released a demo EP in 2008, can you tell us about your favourite track off the EP? Also, when will we get to hear more?
Collectively our favourite track would be “Machine” which is earmarked to be the first or second single off our forthcoming Debut Album to be recorded and released later this year.
What could one expect from a Diamond Eye show?
A Happy Ending! We rock u long time!
If you could travel back in time and play your music to one of your musical hero's, record label's or musical era, who, what or when would it be?
We would go back in time to where Rock n Roll all began in the 50’s and steal everyone’s musical and visual ideas up until now, from AC/DC to ZZ Top!!!
What do you think sets Diamond Eye apart from other rock bands out there today?
Our strong work ethic, commitment to writing and performance, attention to detail and teamwork helps us to find the edge in everything we do.
You won the Perth leg and made it to the Final of the Australian leg of the Global Battle of the Bands to much disappointment not going further. How do you think the way the music industry works these days reflected upon the dare we say obvious winner of the competition?
We feel the competition was geared towards the ultimate winners who received a lot of promotion from the organisers prior to the event. However, we definitely benefited from the exposure at a national level.
The industry will always make their decision based on what they think will work for the majority. A band that is of similar age to early Silverchair and Hanson is a lot more exploitable than more experienced musicians, regardless of ability.
That being said, the Australian band come 2nd in the World Final, go figure!!
What is it that you love most about doing what you do?
We could go down the road of the cliché’s being sex drugs & rock n roll, which is all good of course! But in reality, we enjoy being able to express our collective creativity in our songs and the natural high of playing live to an enthusiastic audience cannot be topped.
You have an amazing and dedicated following that we know will grow with some exposure, how does Diamond Eye plan to take over the world?
Hard work, great songs and an electric live show is our edge and as you have said, with some exposure. “We will crush you under the wheels of our Machine” aye…
What does 2009 and the future hold for Perth's number 1 Rock band?
We’re currently in pre-production and scoping out producers and studios for the recording of our debut album later this year. We are also looking at some distribution labels to help get the album released Australia wide and internationally. To coinicide with the album launch, we will also release a single and video around that time.
As far as shows go, we are playing regularly around Perth and planning on joining the Metalfest Tour of Australia later this year, along with a possible Japanese tour in early 2010.
From there, who knows! Our basic plans is to tour as much as possible and get our name and music out to a wide audience while writing and releasing more tracks as we go. It would be great to make some money too!
